Picture Perfect Winter Wedding - Best for Bride Guide

Winter’s just a couple of months away, so it’s the perfect time to start planning your beautiful winter wedding up until the tiniest detail! Winter weddings are surreal for multiple reasons – the weather makes everyone feel warm and cozy during the ceremony and reception, the atmosphere is nothing short of romantic, and you get to take the most amazing photographs, even if you live in a place where it doesn’t snow much.

In this blog, we’ll be walking you through the tips you need to keep in mind while wedding planning, and we promise you’ll end up with the perfect winter wedding aesthetic and style. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Choose your colours before anything else.

Winter weddings are unique because Christmas is just around the corner. You get to meet everyone dear to you around the same time – and even if they can’t be there in person, there are still ways in which they can virtually join you on your special day – here’s some inspiration in this article to bring the whole family together, both virtually and physically.

Before you start planning all the finer details, you first need to choose what your primary wedding colours are going to be since everything else revolves around these colours (quite literally).

Whether it’s the decor, venue, dress code, flowers, wedding cards, and whatnot, you’ll need to decide on your primary theme colours. This can seem daunting, but don’t worry because we’ve compiled a list of the best colours that go well with winter hues.

To start with, there are two different styles you can go for when planning a winter wedding. It can either be “Bold” or “Mellow,” depending on your personal choice and preference. Here’s a list of complementary colours under both these categories:

Mellow wedding colours for winter:

  • Emerald green and copper-gold
  • Pale blue and silver
  • Lilac and silver
  • Dusty blue and pale gray
  • Sage green and emerald green
  • Dusty rose and champagne

Bold wedding colours for winter:

  • Deep wine with champagne or dusty rose
  • Ocean blue with dusty blue or silver
  • Red with pale green
  • Different shades of blue
  • Different shades of maroon

Of course, these are just the primary colour ideas. Once you’ve decided which style you want to go with and narrowed down on the primary colours, you can add two or more secondary colours that are very close and complementary to the preliminary shade.

This way, everything on your wedding day will come together beautifully, and it won’t look monotonous since you won’t be using the same two shades everywhere. Once you’ve got the colours right, ensure everything else you decide sticks to the theme of the wedding colours.

Add a wintery touch to your gown

We don’t mean that you have to look like the Snow Queen herself (unless you want to), but you can add a slight wintery accent to your gown to go with the winter theme. For instance, some soft, feathery material around the neck lining or a feathery body will look fabulous against the cold, snowy background during your photoshoot.

If this isn’t your style, you can always take inspiration from Disney’s Frozen and go with a shimmery mermaid dress that will accentuate your curves while making you look like an absolute princess.

Don’t forget to tell your tailor to include a tailored jacket for when you’re heading outdoors since it’s going to get chilly, and you need to be prepared.

Arrange your bouquet to fit the theme

One of the most important (but often overlooked) parts of the bride’s outfit is her bouquet. The bouquet is an additional accent that gives you a more well-rounded look, which you’ll also need to carry along through most of the ceremony, especially during your first appearance as the bride during the entrance.

That’s why it’s essential to make sure that it fits in with the theme and does not fall flat or look like it doesn’t belong with the outfit. Here are some ways in which you can make sure that the flower bouquet also matches the wedding theme and bridal gown you’re going for:

  • If your primary colours are shades of red, green, or pink, you can go ahead and include flowers that are of similar or more muted shades in your bouquet. However, it’s best not to have blue flowers unless you find naturally blue flowers since adding artificially coloured or plastic flowers can make the overall attire look a little tacky. So instead, try sticking to natural flowers as much as possible.
  • If you want your bouquet to blend in with the rest of your outfit, go ahead and choose a white flower (roses are the best option for this) and pair it with some dark, evergreen leaves. This way, the white of the flowers doesn’t wholly get camouflaged against your dress but stands out with the green while also looking a bright, fresh appearance, similar to the snowy landscape outside!
  • If you want to keep things simple, go ahead and pick a flower like Baby’s Breath to be the central flower of the bouquet. Not only will it look subtle with a white and green touch, but it will also have a very light and airy appearance, similar to snow. However, if you’d like more texture and colour to the mix, add a few roses and make the Baby’s Breath a secondary flower. This will also help give your additional bouquet depth.

Add accents to your hair

Your hair will get a lot of attention throughout your special day, simply because everyone loves looking at the gorgeous updos that brides usually go for! This is especially true when you have your photo session done and need to get good photographs of the back of the dress and the groom beside you! That’s why it’s essential to make sure you go the extra mile and find a way to add a few touches to your hairdo since this will tie the look together even better.

Here are some ways in which you can add an extra dash of loveliness to your tresses:

  • Tie your hair up in a messy bun and add a wisp of Baby’s Breath between the knots – this will make it look like your hair’s been decorated with pretty snowflakes! Some brides also prefer actuarially decorating their buns with pearls or stones – so you can take a call on which you prefer. While using flowers is a little more natural and rustic, using pearls and stones will look elegant and slightly fancier. It all comes down to personal taste.
  • Tie a french knot and add a string of stones or a thin glitter ribbon to make it look like a strand of hair moving through the knot itself. This will make the elaborate knot stand out while ensuring your hairdo looks complex and beautifully done.
  • Go for a mermaid braid – this hairdo looks especially pretty for women who have long hair that’s also thick. If you’re blessed with such hair, don’t be afraid to rock it as a braid and add stones or flowers to make it look better. While buns are the traditional way many brides go, braids are also coming back in season this year!
  • You can always experiment with different kinds of hair bands and wreaths if you have short hair. For example, some brides who go for an outdoor wedding prefer having a slightly wild, rustic hairdo – in such a case, adding an elegant wreath over your long bob would look nothing short of lovely.
  • If you’re one of those beauties who love flaunting their natural, long hair, go ahead and leave it free! You can also do something like a waterfall braid, so while the upper part of your head looks fancy, the lower part has your hair free falling and is perfect for the winter weather. It’s also a good idea to do this if you’re planning a photo shoot in a windy area since this will make your hair look gorgeous and free.

Soft, warm lighting and colours

It’s winter, so it’s bound to be cold. You don’t want the environment to look fantastic and icy but relatively warm and to invite. Make sure the decor and lights all seem cozy since this will automatically make the place look magical, especially if the wedding’s happening in the evening.

Be sure also to take advantage of Christmas, which will be just around the corner. You can even use pinecones, candles, mistletoe, and other decor elements to make your wedding a wonderful winter gathering for friends and family!
