Perpetual Rhythms Entertainment

I have been a professional DJ and MC for over 40 years, far longer than almost any DJ service in Canada. This experience means I’ve seen what others have not yet, and know what to do in any situation.

My technical background is based on my degree in electrical and acoustics engineering, putting technical expertise at the wedding, not back at the office. I own the best sound system in the business. Every other DJ bought the fad, and 100% of them are fundamentally designed to fail without notice. I don’t understand how DJs chose to know so little and refuse to learn the technical stuff. Instead, they plug and pray (not a typo). Our system can fill a space with twice the coverage at half the loudness, so guests stay in the room and not disappear to the lobby, killing the dance floor energy.

We bring a full backup of everything – enough gear to run another event, in another room, at the same time, and we’ve done it twice when the other client’s DJ didn’t bother to show up. We own our equipment outright. We don’t rent. Other DJs rent or have old, worn equipment or their DJs go to a warehouse to grab what they need, only to find broken cables, etc., as reported to me by more than one of the DJs working for the other companies on your list. If real clients knew only the truth!!! We maintain our gear in mint condition and never stress it; leave it in a trailer (subject to temperature/moisture damage). We are licensed and insured, which most DJs are, but it bears mentioning for completeness.

While our music library is as updated as to any other DJ, with more new releases in a week than we could play all night, we differ from other DJs in that we promote and play up to 100% requests before we even pick one song. The notion of reading a crowd is so ridiculous. No one can look at a guest and know what music they like. Our process creates engagement, participation and ensures the guests hear the music they want to hear, not what some ego-headed DJ thinks they want. I don’t buy this idea, and since we started, this has worked better than any pre-planned playlist of crowd reading. Most DJs ooze confidence or at least ego disguised as confidence. They’re the star of the show. No us. The client is the star. We facilitate their event to be a guest, not micro-managed and worried. This attitude creates a very different feel for the client, bride and groom, corporate event team, etc. It matters how THEY feel, not us. When something happens, ego fails, where actual knowledge and experience come to the rescue. 9) Many DJs are desperate, owing in part to COVID. W are financially resilient and able to maintain our equipment, music, license and insurance despite doing 25% as many bookings as 2019. As such, many DJs grab any booking they can, at any price. Sadly, they underprice, underdeliver, or under cost and find a better booking and subcontract. We know this because I’ve worked for many DJ companies who call at the last minute looking for help when they knew they couldn’t make the booking since they took the booking. We don’t take this “Grab and Hope” business model. Our clients book us because, among 40 reasons, we commit, regardless of price or scope, because it’s a matter of integrity. We meet our clients in person. Some of these DJs are purely online, so clients book with colossal risk misled to believe the DJ company is in Toronto, when in fact, they are based in another province! If only they knew.

We offer the most emotionally engaging event experience, so far beyond what other DJs provide in terms of wedding highlights. They settle for 8, and we deliver over 38. The result is a better wedding, more fun, more moments, more memories and the photos prove it. All of our online reviews and video testimonials are genuine, and we also have written letters from hundreds of clients initially. In an online world, we know many businesses that offer a gift card to a coffee shop; for example, random people leave a review. Sadly, this corrupts the whole process, so clients need to do their due diligence, not take the word of a total stranger who has no skin in the client’s game. We still invite clients to learn and send comprehensive responses to their inquiries despite our authentic reviews. Then, they make a truly informed decision, and we are proud to say we get paid far more than our competition because our clients were something radically better – Perpetual Rhythms is that and more.

I am also a certified wedding planner. Combined with my engineering mindset, I offer clients the opportunity to save thousands of dollars on their entire wedding. We’ve studied the industry for decades, discovered the top 7 mistakes couples make and created a unique solution to help them plan a better marriage and more than we even charge to DJ it. Essentially, we are then FREE.

I am also a wedding officiant, something the other DJs don’t offer. This creates a better, more streamlined wedding ceremony, stress-free day, end to end, and brings the entire event experience to bear, start to finish. We bring extensive lighting – more than any other DJ. They seem focused on minimalism. We go big, with more lighting, to create great ambiance and energy. Our lights are computer-controlled and time synced to the music, and we’ve seen the set it and forget offerings of other DJs, and there’s simply no comparison. I also wrote a book for DJs about lighting to increase their business as part of a series of 14 books I registered in the DJ space. My goal was to help raise the bar, so clients get better DJs.

My father was a DJ, so it helped put food on the table for my family, and I’ve considered myself a DJ from early childhood through descendancy.  My childhood memories consisted of observing my dad DJ and experiencing good music’s impact on people. So it’s safe to say I was born with a turntable at my fingertips and a piece in my soul. I understand the art of music, and it runs deep within me.

It also helped pay my way through school to become a Respiratory Therapist, a profession that I walked away from because my passion for DJing exceeded healthcare.  Playing music is also therapeutic for me; seeing what playing the right song at the right moment does to a crowd is absolute bliss!  When a DJ loves what they do, their energy can’t help but transcend through the speakers, and that’s the experience I strive to bring to the table. I also pride myself in being involved in a wedding day’s planning process, from the initial consultation to exciting the crowd and keeping the party flowing and bodies moving.

FAQ

What should be included in a wedding DJ contract?

The first thing that should be mentioned in the contract is the event details. This would include the date and venue location of the wedding, as well as the starting and ending time that the DJ will be expected to work. Another important mention in the contract should be the payment fees. This will include the overall payment fee, overtime payment and a late fee if the invoice is not paid on the day agreed upon. It is crucial to agree in advance on the DJ and/or band’s requirements on space and equipment. This agreement should also be a part of the contract as well.

The DJs and Bands’ responsibilities, as well as the client’s responsibilities, should be discussed when the client meets the vendor. The vendor’s responsibilities can include the amount of time they will be expected to play music if there are certain playlists that should be played at certain times. It would also be important to discuss the setup of the equipment depending on the location of the venue and whether the vendor will be using their personal equipment. The client’s responsibilities would include creating playlists or requests for songs to be played. It is important that it is discussed what type of music is played and if there are certain songs that need to be played at appropriate times. This should cover the majority of the wedding DJ contract. The rest would include the termination, warranty, confidentiality and miscellaneous information.

How much do wedding DJs and bands charge?

The cost of a wedding DJ or band depends on the specifics and can vary on which vendor you are hiring. The average cost in 2019 was $1,500 but there are ways to find wedding music entertainment to either fit your budget or be more extravagant. A DJ or band’s prices depend greatly on their experience in the wedding music industry. The more experience a wedding DJ or band has, the more they charge typically due to the fact that they have a higher reputation. This would also apply to famous vendors and those who have worked with celebrities and their rates are higher. Another factor for pricing would be how much equipment is needed and the expectations from the clients. It is important to discuss the amount of equipment that will be used and whether it will be provided or the vendor’s personal equipment. The amount of time spent at the wedding can also be a definitive factor in the price point of the vendor as they will need higher payment if they are working for a longer amount of time. Any special requests, date and location for the wedding can also be factors that affect the pricepoint of the wedding music entertainment. Overall, it is important to discuss this information with both your partner as well as the vendor to come into the interview having an idea of a price point and expectations from the vendor.

How do I choose the right wedding DJ or band?

Choosing wedding music entertainment is completely personal and should be discussed between you and your partner. The first thought is usually to choose a wedding DJ band that you may personally know. This may be a good idea as it would be easier to communicate your thoughts and visions for the wedding. However, sometimes it can be difficult as you may want a different style of music for the wedding. It is important to be able to separate their qualifications from your personal relationship when considering vendors that you personally know. An option that many couples find helpful is to ask for referrals from their friends who are married. This way you can have more insight into how the vendor operates and communicates with the vendors. You could also ask the venue for referrals if you aren’t able to find a vendor you connect with through your friends. Lastly, it is very important to interview several possible vendors before finally choosing the wedding DJ or band for your special day. Make a list of around 5 wedding music entertainment vendors that you enjoy and will fit the theme of your wedding. After interviewing, you want to choose the candidate that you connected the best with and one that completely understood the vision that you have for your wedding day.
