10 things you should NOT do at your wedding

We have often spoken about wedding etiquette on our blog and discussed various lists of “Do’s” that you should follow at your wedding. However, we haven’t given much thought to all the things that you SHOULDN’T do!

Not doing certain things on your wedding day is just as important as doing other things. Only then will your wedding progress smoothly and things be fine as they should. Here is a list of things that you should avoid doing on your wedding day! Keep these in mind, and you will save yourself a lot of trouble.

Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many responsibilities

From making sure that your bridesmaids are ready on time, to setting up wedding favours and following up with vendors, there are hundreds of tasks that you may have to handle on the wedding day. Pay close attention to this—Don’t do anything more than what you absolutely must, on your wedding day.

You should relax and enjoy your wedding, and even the smallest task that you handle yourself can affect you adversely. So, free yourself up during the day, and delegate most of the responsibilities to those who are capable of handling them. After all, this is why you have bridesmaids, family and friends. This is also why we think every bride should at least have a day-of planner, if not a wedding planner. Trust them to do the job well, and only supervise their activities. Don’t overwhelm yourself with last-minute responsibilities. Save your attention to what is happening at the moment, as this is the best way to enjoy your wedding to the fullest.

Don’t test anything out for the first time on your wedding day

Whether it is brand new make-up or your wedding shoes, don’t ever make the mistake of trying it on for the first time on your actual wedding day. When you experiment on your wedding day, you run the risk of things ending up disastrously. The worst part is that there may not be time for corrections if you do not like what you see. So, prepare for your wedding day in advance, so you know what you will get. Make sure you do the following ahead of time:

  • Have a trial makeup and hair session, so you can comfortably plan your wedding day look and make changes if you aren’t happy with your original idea.
  • Try on your wedding dress after your alterations are done, so you can attend to any last-minute changes if required
  • Break-in your wedding shoes by wearing them regularly for small amounts of time during the days leading up to the wedding. This will help you get used to the shoes and will make all activities on the day, including dancing, a lot more fun.
  • Use your rehearsal dinner to discuss, distribute and organize the entire wedding day activities in a planned fashion.

Don’t be too busy meeting and greeting your guests

wedding-725435_640

Wedding guests despise couples who are aloof and too busy to spend any time with them. Appreciate the effort of every one of your guests who come to attend your wedding. Even if you aren’t particularly interested in meeting guests you don’t know, (perhaps they are from your parents’ or in-laws’ guest list), be courteous and make an effort to chat with them.

All the people who are at your wedding have spent time and money to be there, and they deserve to be acknowledged. Only then will your guests remember your wedding fondly. So, set aside time and make sure you smile, wave and talk to every one of your guests. This article on the Wedding Wire gives more valuable advice on some of the other things that wedding guests hate at a wedding. It may be a good idea to check it out and plan your wedding accordingly.

Never go hungry or thirsty on your wedding day

There are many things to keep you busy from dawn to dusk on your wedding day, and this is precisely why you shouldn’t be thirsty or hungry while coping with all that strain. The last thing you want is to feel light-headed, parched or dizzy because you didn’t get the nutrition you needed for this hectic day.

Although your schedule is tight, factor in breaks to hydrate and munch on something. Choose no-fuss, easy to eat and digest foods that will neither create a mess nor be too difficult to eat, when you are pressed for time. Have a healthy breakfast to kick-start the day on the right note. Plan simple small meals and snacks for the rest of the day, so you aren’t hungry. Also, choose clear fluids to hydrate yourself, so you don’t have to worry about staining your dress.

Don’t forget to plan your important photo shoots well

beach-wedding-615219_640

Some wedding photos, like those that have to be taken at sunset, have to be timed perfectly. Don’t just assume that it will happen as intended. If you miss the moment, you cannot claim it back, and that would be a huge disappointment.

So, if there are shots that you want to take when the lighting is just right, or before you change your outfit or accessories, plan them in advance. Discuss these with your photographer, so you both know when it is time. Also delegate the duty of reminding you about it, to one of your efficient and punctual bridesmaids, and you can worry less about it. With a little foresight and systematic planning, everything about a wedding will progress smoothly and with no hassles.

Don’t lose your cool

You may be worried, anxious and irritated by the way things progress or by how some people behave on your wedding day. This may be a jealous bridesmaid, an inefficient vendor or even a guest. Whatever be the case, never react in the heat of the moment and do something you may later regret. Even if you are fully justified in blowing your top in such a scenario, remember that it is a happy occasion and everybody becomes uncomfortable when things go berserk and an argument or fight ensues.

Although Bridezillas aren’t very uncommon, remember that nobody likes being around one. When you sort things out by getting angry, nobody including you feels good about it. So, control your temper, and mentally prepare yourself to be calm and happy, irrespective of what happens. If you are certain that something wrong is bound to happen, consider your options and think of a solution in advance. If you expect a wedding vendor to do a shabby job on the day, warn him in advance. If a guest is bound to kick up an argument, find a sensible solution like arranging a distraction, that will avoid such a scenario. If things still go wrong, hush it up and settle it silently. The fewer the people who know about it, the fewer the chances of it becoming a topic of conversation.

Don’t complain

Even if things don’t go as per plan or you are unhappy with certain arrangements, try to focus on the positives and be happy on your special day. If you have a genuine reason for complaints, save it for later. This is not the time to secretly bemoan your in-laws or express how disappointed you are with your bridal party.

Remember that your complaints are not going to change anything, except maybe irritate a few people. Also, you will spoil your own mood, when you dwell on the negatives instead of enjoying the good things going on. And think of what would happen if you were overheard by the wrong people? How would it be if your complaints were to reach the person you spoke about. This would only irritate them and make them unhappy about being at your wedding. Try to be positive, and brush off things before they get to you, and your wedding day will be a lot more fun.

Don’t be unprepared for wedding day emergencies

Wedding day mishaps happen, and often when you least expect it. The best way is to be prepared for any likely scenario. Depending on your wedding details, there are chances for different things to go wrong. If you have an outdoor wedding in summer, nature may surprise you with a quick shower. Your wedding dress may end up with a stain or a button may come lost. You or someone in the bridal party may suddenly feel dizzy or nauseated with all the excitement. So, there are plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong.

As optimistic as you may be, it doesn’t hurt to be ready for the worst. Pack your emergency kit for any wedding day disaster, or even buy it online, and you should be ready to tide over most emergencies. Find out all about what should go into this kit by checking out this previous post of ours.

Don’t get drunk

drunk

We know it is a happy occasion and merriment goes with booze, but don’t drown yourself in it. Things can get ugly if you go overboard with the drinks, and it can ruin your entire memory of the happy event. You do not want your guests to see you drunk and doing things you wouldn’t want them to see. Plus, they will always remember your wedding because of how drunk the bride was.

No matter how well you plan your wedding, if you or your husband create a scene after getting drunk, this will be in your guests’ memories years later. Also, you may miss out or have clouded memory of several details of the special day, if you are soaring on alcohol. So, enjoy the champagne from the toast, and maybe an extra drink or two. But stay away from any more than you really need.

Don’t forget to enjoy yourself

We think this is the most important of all of them. Don’t get so caught up with wedding etiquette, meeting and greeting, managing vendors and planning and organizing everything, that you forget to truly live and enjoy every moment of your wedding day. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion and one that you deserve to remember every detail of.

So, while you chat with your guests, don’t get caught up in long conversations that will keep you away from all the fun. Delegate as many responsibilities as possible, and try not to micromanage every last detail, or you will have no time for fun. Your wedding is a day that you have planned to perfection, and if anyone deserves to enjoy it, it has to be you. Take brief moments to look around and capture those memory snapshots, dance like you mean it and enjoy your first kiss so it becomes a fond memory.

This brings us to the end of the lengthy list of what you shouldn’t do on your wedding day. Didn’t we tell you, it isn’t as bad as it sounds? With a little planning, you can steer clear of trouble. Do you have any more to add to this list? We would love it if you could share your insights with us in the comments section.

10 common makeup mistakes to avoid on your wedding day

Your wedding day is the one occasion when all eyes will be on you, and you do not want to disappoint. It is easy to imagine yourself as a beautiful bride. However, making it a reality is not just as easy. Good looks don’t happen overnight. Skin care and grooming should be an ongoing task to ensure you are in top form on your wedding day.

Despite your skin and hair being in top shape on your wedding day, you may not look as good as you wanted to, if your makeup isn’t done well. In fact, your choice of makeup can make or break your overall look. Hence it is important to pay close attention to how you dress yourself up on your wedding day.

Here is a list of the most common wedding makeup mistakes that brides commonly make. Stay one step ahead of the game by preparing in advance, so these do not prevent you from looking great on the most important day of your life.

1.Not having a specific idea of how your makeup should be on the day

Rather than go with what you think will be good, or leave things to the discretion of your makeup artist, prepare yourself with a specific idea of how you should look on your wedding day. Nail this look at your makeup trial session.

Before you book your makeup artist, have a trial session where you can see exactly how you will look on your wedding day. Look for inspiration in  magazines and off the internet, and take these with you to your appointment, as references. This will give your makeup artist a framework to work with. By checking out how this will be during the trial, you can recognize whether it will work, or if it is better to make changes to your idea.

2.Not finding the perfect foundation color

For those of you brides who will be doing your wedding makeup yourself, your wedding day is not the time to open a brand new bottle of foundation. You should ideally have settled on the shade to wear, at least a few weeks in advance.

Wearing foundation that is darker than your skin tone will give you an artificial, painted look, while wearing one that is a shade or two lighter can make you look all dolled up. Neither will be right. Make sure you find the right shade, as this will be the best way to enhance your looks and cover up natural problem areas and have crystal clear skin on the day. If you can’t find your foundation easily, try to mix up foundation colors till you find the right shade. Just remember that your wedding day shouldn’t be the occasion to first try it out. You should have figured out the right proportions to mix, well in advance. Only then will you avoid making a mistake on the day.

3.Not using waterproof makeup, especially eye makeup

Even if you have to spend extra on waterproof makeup, it is worth every penny. Water resistant eye makeup is an absolute essential for your wedding day. Even if you manage to keep your tears at bay, your eye makeup can get ruined quickly and look far from fresh by the end of the day, if it isn’t waterproof. So, buy mascara, eye liner and eye shadow that can withstand your emotional outbursts on this very special day.

If your wedding is in the warmer months, it is a good idea to invest in good quality waterproof makeup not just for your eyes, but for every part of your face. This way, you do not have to worry about the makeup running when you sweat, and you can retain your freshly made up look all through the evening.

4.Overly blushing bride

Excess use of blush will ruin your wedding day pictures. You may want to stand out from the rest of the crowd, but don’t let it be at the cost of looking too pink. Apply blush only to the apples of your cheeks and blend, blend, blend till they look like they are part of your facial features. Also, it is best to go light with color. Overly pink shades can be an eyesore and look excessively pronounced in your wedding pictures. So, stick to shades that you have used before.

If you use bronzer, blend it into the blush, so it doesn’t stand out distinctly. Make sure that you already have tried it out and made sure that the shade works, and you aren’t experimenting with it on the day of the event.

5. Looking very unnatural

Your wedding day is the right occasion to dress up your best, but this doesn’t mean you should end up looking like someone else altogether. We believe that the best looking brides are those who look like prettier versions of themselves, through the right application of makeup. So, aim for this. Stick with colors that just accentuate your features and add more definition to your natural look. Don’t use unnatural tints, unless absolutely necessary.

Cat eyes and smoky makeup, emerald eye shadow and glitter on your cheek may be fine, but make sure you try it out before the day, to make sure that it looks good and that you can comfortably carry it off. Also remember that smoky eye makeup often doesn’t look too great in photographs. Your photos could end up looking odd with shadows around the eyes, so check the chances of this happening. Tans, browns, natural pinks, cream and taupe are shades that look good in almost every setting. So, focus on this palette, instead of reds, purples and oranges. If you must wear that bright red lipstick on your wedding day, balance it out by keeping the rest of your makeup simple. Too many colorful details can look loud, and you may end up looking overly dressed and unattractive.

6. Overdoing your eye makeup

We just mentioned how smoky eye make up may not be such a great idea for your wedding day. It can easily spread and doesn’t show up as well in photographs. Although the eyes are very important to enhancing your overall wedding day look, do it sensibly so it doesn’t look overly dramatic.

This article on the Huff Post suggests using black only in the mascara, for your eye makeup. Keep the rest of the colors soft, and it will look a lot better. We recommend cream makeup, since it lasts longer and is easier to apply. Powder is fine when applied, but it doesn’t stay as long. Another important factor is to consider the color of your eyes when deciding on your eye makeup. The colors you choose should subtly enhance the natural beauty of your eye color. If you will be using false eyelashes, do not add more than is required, as it can look a little crazy. When filling in your brows, do so with eye shadow that matches the color on your upper eyelid. Follow the natural curve of the brow for the best results.

7.Let the skin glow through

Many brides make the mistake of piling on too much makeup that they end up blocking the natural look of the skin. Use only as much makeup as is necessary, and go easy with the foundation, blush and base makeup. If you have naturally good skin, airbrushing is a good option. This allows your skin to shine through and nothing looks as good as healthy and naturally glowing skin.

Thick layers of makeup also tend to look cakey, and can make you look older in photos. It is essential to balance it all out, and stay with what feels comfortable and doesn’t look too much. Add concealer only where absolutely necessary, and use the foundation appropriately to cover up any flaws. Don’t create a mask over your natural skin. This will look lifeless. Trust your natural beauty to shine through, and use makeup only to enhance it where necessary. You will look lovely and dewy when you do this.

8.Overdoing the lips

When the rest of your makeup is complete, you may feel that your lips look washed out and pale, and you must color it well to make it blend in. Don’t do too much painting, or you will regret it. Just apply the necessary layer of lipstick, don’t be too generous with it. Exfoliate your lips before you apply lipstick, so it looks soft and the lipstick sticks for much longer.

If your lipstick is naturally glossy, or bright, it may be good if you skip the gloss. Too much shine can cause your lips to lose definition, will make it look flat and your lipstick may even spread. Lip stain is always better than lipstick, as it lasts longer. The other problem with lip gloss is that it will come in the way of your kiss and your groom will end up with a matching lip color, which we don’t think could possibly look good!

9.Getting the tan wrong

A healthy tan looks great on a bride, but overdoing it, or using fake tan lotions can ruin the chances of looking good. Some fake tans look good in person, but end up giving an orange look in pictures . When going for tan sessions, we suggest that you do it well in advance. This will save you from any disastrous problems closer to your wedding day.

One likely problem is your skin ending up with streaks from a previous tanning session. You can avoid this problem if you build up your tan over a series of session, instead of in a single intense session closer to the wedding day. This will also prevent you from going overboard with the tan.

10.Not setting the makeup with powder or allowing it time to set

The last step when you apply makeup, should be applying a loose layer of translucent powder over your makeup. Alternately, you can also use a makeup up setting spray. These are the right ways to make sure your makeup stays. If you skip this step, you will find that your makeup fades as time passes, and you will end up looking tired and with soggy makeup by the end of the day.

However, don’t use too much powder to set your lipstick, as this will cause it to fade faster. Instead layer your lipstick with lip stain and line it to keep your lips defined throughout the day. Long-lasting lipstick is a good choice. Also, aim to finish your makeup on schedule, as it takes time for it to settle. If not, you will be caught with it smearing with the smallest move, and repairing it will not be too easy.

That wraps up the list of the different makeup mistakes that can happen, and how you can either avoid them or fix them.
