OUR STORY:
In early 2006 one of my long-time friends set me up with a guy she knew from college. He had seen a few pictures of me she had on her computer from a times we'd hung out and said he wanted to meet me. Our first meeting was planned, and then I got mono. I postponed our first date, leading him to believe I wasn't interested anymore. Finally, even though I was still a little sick, we had our first date. I had told him I wasn't able to eat much other than smooth things, like pudding and yogurt, but my roommate had just eaten the last of it. Instead of flowers. he brought me a big case of snackpacks. Adorable! I remember thinking on our first date "I'll probably marry this guy!" and I was right! Not long after we began our relationship, my father suffered a stroke and was in the hospital for about a month. My father was so protective and loving, the best dad anyone could ever want. Even though we lived an hour apart, Shane came to visit me every weekend, and sometimes throughout the week too, knowing I needed him as I was going through this. The night before my dad died, Shane told me he loved me for the first time. I, of course, said it back and truly meant it. The next morning, Shane told me he had a dream he'd met my dad and they shook hands. When I got upstairs, my sister was walking up to the front porch, crying. She had just gotten a phone call that our father had passed away the night before and was on life support until we got to the hospital. He had passed away less than an hour after our first "I love you". I feel as though my dad knew he didn't need to protect me anymore and could let go and stop suffering. He knew I'd be okay because Shane was my angel to be my protector. THE PROPOSAL: A few months later, on my dad's birthday, Shane took me out on a date. He took me to the same theatre we went to on our first date, and for a walk through the same park we'd gone to on our first date as well. He took me to a beautiful spot by a pond surrounding by flowers and trees (where we'd also had our first kiss!) and got down on one knee and proposed! I was so surprised! I thought it was going to be quite awhile before he actually proposed. He chose my dad's birthday because they never got to meet in real life, and would have asked my dad before proposing. This way, he could make sure my dad was a part of the big day. He thought of everything to make the day perfect for me, and has been just as thoughtful throughout our entire relationship. I am so blessed! |
