On New Year's Day, we had the day off work, so we drove back to UC Berkeley to take our old neighbor's golden retriever for a walk. We went through campus, and reminisced on our time there together. Toward the end, Kenny was a little quiet, but assured me he was just fine. He said "You know where I haven't been in a while? FPF!" We walked over to FPF, the Fall Program for Freshman building where we met on the first week of our freshman year of college in 2009.
We peered into the dark classroom where we had sat next to each other in our Anthropology 1 class. It was dark, but Kenny tried pulling on the door and it opened. We brought the dog in with us, and saw a bunch of twinkly lights strung around the chairs. I still thought they were left over from the previous semester, even when Kenny picked up a remote and turned them on. I later found out that he was trying to play music on his phone too, but it didn't work! He nudged me toward the front of the classroom, where he had set up a circle of lights on the floor. He said we started a chapter of our lives in this room, and thought it fitting for us to start a new chapter of our lives here too. He got on one knee and shakily asked if I would marry him. Of course I said "Yes yes yes yes yes!" I was so touched at how many of our old friends at Berkeley worked together to help him set up. We walked back to our old neighbors' home, and they had hugs and champagne for us. We ended the surreal experience with a lovely dinner on the bay at the Berkeley Marina. |
