Alex & Devon - Sunset Rocks Proposal Story

Last summer my boyfriend of 8.5 years (we are high school sweethearts who started dating in grade 10) were heading to Killbear Provincal Park to have a few days of camping with his family. This camping trip happens every year and so it is a tradition to go. However, last summer will be one that surpasses them all as to my honest surprise Alex proposed!
To rewind a little Alex and I had briefly always talked about getting engaged when we were 23 as it would be a good time to make that step. Alex was soon approaching the age of 24 and when i would mention rings he would ask if I was going to buy the ring myself. I backed off immediately and told my closest friends and family that it was not going to happen any time soon. Only to my surprise it was because he was already looking at rings on his own. Each morning before work he would drive into town where he was working in the summer and look at rings. He did this for a little more than a week until he finally picked the right one. No one in my family knew nor in his family it was a big secret he had kept to himself. The night before we left for Killbear Alex went and asked my grampa for permission to take this next step. I was very honoured to hear that he did ask him as he is like a father to me. I also loved hearing how nervous he was having this conversation. Now the actual proposal ... Alex and I have always made a point of going to these rocks known as Sunset Rocks to watch the sunset every year when we went camping. This year was no different, as after dinner I asked him if we could go. Surprising Alex did not ask any of his family to come but that did not tip me off in the slightest. When we got to the rocks it was honestly filled with people and I commented on this (poor Alex must have been freaking out) and we went to find a spot to sit to watch the sunset. As we sat there Alex asked if I would like a picture with the sunset behind me and I said no. So I asked him if he would like a picture with the sunset. Of course he said yes and stood up. Now alex has a tendency to make funny faces in pictures and so while holding my phone up ready to take the picture I jokingly said "Are you going to do something funny?" and he said "Yes" and got down on one knee and asked me very simply to marry him. There was nothing more that needed to be said. Of course in absolute shock I said YES! and it honestly took me by so much surprise that I was at a loss for words. The best part of it all is that Alex actually proposed to me in the spot that I envisioned him doing so. It was a special place for us and it could not have been more perfect. Now as we plan this wedding I am so excited to be taking this next step with a man who truly loves me for who I am and its always by my side the moment I need him. He is my rock and I feel so blessed to be able to say I am going to spend the rest of my life with this man. |
