Dave Smith & Sarah Pettit

A Story to tell our grandchildren someday:

It was a chilly afternoon on August 21st 2010. Because it was getting much colder in the season, I decided that this trip would be my last trip out, so we brought my father along for a quiet day of fishing. My Father, boyfriend and I had left early Saturday morning, and were looking forward to a nice quiet day on our little boat together. After 2 hours of driving leisurely on the boat, we suddenly stopped moving. The batteries were dead. In the excitement for packing for the day, we had forgotten to charge the batteries that sat dead behind us in the boat. Trying to make a joke out of our misfortune, we slowly floated to a nearby dock.

An elderly gentlemen and his wife, who sat listening to the radio together, noticed that we were parked beside their dock, and wondered if we needed any help. Laughing at our circumstances, we asked him if he would have an extension cord handy. He luckily had a 100 ft extension cord, which just made it to the boat, but sadly no battery charger. My boyfriend pondered for a moment, then noticed that his neighbor was home, and walked over to ask him if he would have a battery charger to lend for a little while. He searched his garage and found a battery charger. Not sure if it worked or not, he told us to give it a try. As we sat on the dock waiting for the batteries to charge, it started raining, but being wet already we all sat together in the rain fishing. About 30 minutes had passed, when we decided that the batteries should be okay. We thanked both of the kind strangers for their assistance by allowing us to use the battery charger and extension cord, and headed back out on the water, not realizing that we wouldn't get very far.

We continued to boat around the lake for just over an hour, and as we turned the boat around and were heading back; we all looked at each other and laughed together. "The batteries are dead". Once again the batteries were dead, and it was even funnier that we were floating by the same two people who had helped us out, not longer than an hour earlier. Seeing us pull up again, the man nicely brought down his extension cord, and we went to ask to borrow the battery charger again from the neighbor. This time we decided to give the batteries a full hour to charge, so as the batteries charged for the second time that day, we all sat in the cool rain fishing off the little dock, keeping each other positive by laughing at our misfortune for the day.

After an hour of catching little tiny fish off this kind elderly couples dock, we thanked both of them again, and joked with them about being back later on. It was getting a bit late in the afternoon, and my father had decided that he would head home. We got back on the boat, and made it back to where our vehicles were parked. We parked the boat at the boat launch and said our goodbyes for the fun day we had just had. We apologized to my father for the misfortune of having the batteries die both times but how the day was now filled with memories of the last trip out for the season. Watching him drive off made me a bit sad because we really wanted to make this day a memorable one and the batteries dying seemed to take away from that.

After we got a bite to eat, we returned to the boat, untied and pushed off from the dock when "OHHHH NOOOOO" I cried out load. "We are out of gas" said Dave. Looking at each other we both laughed. Floating back to the boat launch, I held the boat; while he took the gas tank out of the boat and drove his car back into town to get gas. It was a quiet 20 minutes waiting for him to get back and by this time I was getting pretty exhausted and only wanted a short boat ride before calling it a day. When he returned, he was carrying the gas tank full this time to the boat, climbed in the boat, nearly dropping the heavy gas tank in the water, which of course would have sank. I explained that I was really getting tired and was soaked, and that I just wanted a short boat ride. Leaning over and kissing me on the cheek he softly said "okay", and that he had been wanting me to see this really pretty place on the water all day.

We headed back out, this time with batteries that were charged and a full tank of gas. It was about a 20 minute drive by boat, when we came to these locks. From my perspective they didn't look too fantastic to have wanted to see them at this point, but Dave explained that the beautiful part was on the other side of the locks. We tied off the boat, and climbed on this little bridge, with a 50 ft drop on one side, and the lake on the other side. We slowly walked across. Going down the wet stairs on the other side, and going through this little wooded area; we came to the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. It was so beautiful. As if from a scene from a movie, we stood with the water rushing all around our feet, and pausing to take pictures and take it all in, I was in such amazement that it had taken us all day to get here.

The sun was just setting, and the sky was a perfect orange & purple color. Dave and I stood hugging as the cool water rushed around our feet. I was looking around taking pictures. When I looked at Dave, he was on his knee looking at his shoe. Thinking he was going to tie his show, I jokingly said "What are you doing Dave? You're going to get wet?" I laughed and kept taking pictures of the beauty surrounding us. I looked back again at Dave and this time he wasn't tying his shoe but had a ring box in this hand. He proposed right then and there. It was so amazingly beautiful that we started crying, and then laughed, realizing all of the events that had taken place that day was just to get me to see these falls, and to propose. This trip is defiantly one that we will be telling our children and their children to come.

Hey you guys, take a look!
It was a fantastic day and everyone said I looked amazing and I felt like a real princess for a day.
I'm soooo glad you had this dress, its exactly what I wanted.
The 'shrug', it didn't have arms, it just hung down, looked really cool. It looked like a shawl only it stayed on and was comfortable and covered my arms. It was perfect.
I havn't got the official wedding pics back but thought I'd send this one.

Thanks again!
