My boyfriend and I had been dating for 2.5 years and I decided to throw him a huge surprise 30th birthday party with close to 100 of our friends and family members from around the country. I'd been planning the party for five months and left no detail unattended, including making an excuse for our 120 lb Newfoundland dog to be in daycare for the weekend (which he was adamantly against given that she is his other "true love"!). My boyfriend seemed utterly shocked at the surprise and after some relatives and I gave a toast to him later in the party we asked him to say a few words as the "guest of honor". During his thank you speech he turned to me in front of all our friends and family and said "I want to thank the love of my life for putting this incredible day together and, while you may think I'm the guest of honor, the real one is just arriving!" At that moment our huge dog burst through the dining room door wearing a t-shirt. Everyone was so surprised and excited to see her that it took a few minutes to notice that the shirt she was wearing said "Will You Marry My Dad?" By the time I realized what the shirt said, my boyfriend was on his knee in front of nearly 100 of the people closest to us asking me if I would marry him. When I said "YES" he brought out several bottles of champagne he had been hiding in the basement for the past few days (in the room next to where I had been hiding all his party stuff!). Apparently someone had slipped the news of the party by mistake to my boyfriend several weeks before it and he decided to turn all my plans around on me and give me the most exciting and surprising day of my life! And he kept all his plans to himself so there were 100 people who were as shocked as I was that day! |
