There is a tradition in the UK and Ireland that women can propose to men only on a Leap Day. Well I had planned to do it this year as there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to marry this man.
I baked all day and made cupcakes that were yellow and blue and spelled out my proposal in scrabble inspired cookies. I chose blue and yellow because of the Leap Dave Williams Story of 30 Rock the week before. Ryan was loving the celebration activities on the show so I decided to use it as my inspiration. We are also huge Scrabble buffs, so I knew he would appreciate the cookies. I covered the cupcakes and cookies on the coffee table and cleaned the house so it would look nice. I wore a blue dress with a blue flower in my hair, and wore a yellow lay with yellow earings and waited. Wow is it nerve racking to propose! Props to all the men out there who do this! So he came home and was very confused, since I was supposed to be at work. And I said "Happy Leap Day" and blew bubbles at him as he came in. The week before he had said he wanted to celebrate the day, so he was very excited and looked happy to be getting a Leap Day treat. I sat down with him on the couch and told him how much I love him and want him to be my parter in life and continue to love life and laugh our way through it. I told him I thought he was the most gentle, kind and caring man who supports me through life and I love our life together. I then said, "I know this isn't traditional, but then you told me I wasn't traditional two years ago when we first discussed marriage. So I have to ask, "Will you marry me?" and stood up and lifted the cover off of the cupcakes I made and waited. He said yes right away and was blown away by the effort I put into everything. He was just so stunned and then he saw the ring I put on the last cupcake. He said he loved it and that it was exactly what he would have wanted for a wedding band. So after I proposed, he ran upstairs. He came back down and stood in front of me. He said that he couldn't dream of being with anyone else, and that he loves me and wanted to make the proposal special. He explained that he has had the ring for months and wanted it to be perfect. He said that this is the perfect time, in our house is the perfect place because it was our home that we built together. Then he got down on one knee and proposed right BACK! I started balling! I love him for proposing right back, and I knew I did the right think for our relationship. It was perfect and exactly as I wanted. He said he didn't know about the Leap Day tradition of proposing but that he loved it and feels so loved.
