My Fiance is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and was preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. I had just lost my Dad and had the year from hell, beginning college as a mature student and preparing for Marcus' departure. I took a summer job to help pay for my schooling, leaving little time to spend with Marcus before he had to deploy.
We had been together for 3 years and have had the time of our lives exploring Alberta and living in Toronto and were soon to be heading to Paris, England, Scotland & Ireland during his down time from Afghanistan . We were having a family gathering re-shingling my Mom's roof and a birthday party for myself, my niece and nephew that I had arranged and wasn't able to attend. Little did I know that my Mom had called my boss and told her of the plans for that afternoon and getting me the afternoon off. Before Marcus left for training when my Dad was sick; Marcus snuck back to my house and asked my Daddy for permission to marry me fearing he might not have another chance. Marcus' fear proved to be true. We lost my Dad in April. During the afternoon of the birthday party on July 5th (my birthday) Marcus asked me to go for a walk. He took me down to the lake to a rock overlooking the gorgeous sunset on Lake Couchiching - the exact spot where my Dad had proposed to my Mom. We sat down and talked for a while reminisced about my Dad. I suggested we head back before we lost the sun completely unless there was anything else and never suspecting a thing. Marcus said that there was and then started to get up and repositioned himself onto one knee and asked me - will you do me the honor of becoming my wife; Mandy will you marry me? In the same spot my Dad almost dropped my Mom's ring in the lake Marcus knelt there trembling as I bawled my eyes out and he had to ask 'is that a yes?' |
