I was in New York for our yearly sales conference which always ends up being a hectic week in between meetings and evening events. As the week concludes the only thing you can hope for is good weather so you make it back to Toronto without any delays.
Unfortunately when September 30th came around (the day to go home) Tropical Storm Nicole hit the city which was causing numerous cancellations and delays out of La Guardia with the excessive wind and rain. I was determined to sneak out of the meetings to catch an earlier flight before the weather got worse.
With that in mind a few of us packed up and headed toward the airport. A co-worker of mine was in contact with others who were already at the airport. They told us they were being re-routed to Montreal and that the chances of us getting home tonight were slim. For anyone who has been to La Guardia knows that it is not the place you want to spend hours waiting at so my friend had the idea to go into the city to have a few drinks and a bite to eat to help pass the time. I was a bit displeased as I still had a bit of hope that somehow I would get on a flight but followed the group! After being stuck in traffic we arrived at Columbus Circle where we decided that it would be a good spot to get out and walk to a restaurant. Our driver pulled up on the side of the road where I got out and tried to open the trunk to get my suitcase. The trunk was locked and my co-workers were already walking ahead briskly and muttering something about the driver not being able to do drop offs here so we had to meet him on the other side of the circle. Boy was this getting stupid I thought! I started walking and caught up to one of my co-workers who was also trailing behind. We walked for a few minutes until I heard my name being called; "Chelsea", "Chelsea" - I looked to my left and there was Paul standing in front of the Christopher Columbus statue with a dozen red roses and wearing my favorite shirt of his! I was shocked and felt a bit disoriented as he wasn't supposed to be here - I'm in New York I'm thinking not Toronto! But after the initial shock wore off I knew why he was there. He took me by my hand and we walked into Central Park. My memory from here is a bit of a blur ... I recall bits of our conversation and me asking over and over "What are you doing here?!". His response was minimal until we got to the Bow Bridge. He got out a letter he had prepared and read it to me. It was so perfect and he even attached a picture of our dogs that he had taken that morning before he left as they could not make the trip. He opened the box and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I instantly said YES!! I was so surprised and once the ring was on my finger I could not take my eyes of it! It was so beautiful! After the proposal we went and ate at the Porter House restaurant that overlooked Central Park and then enjoyed the city for a few hours, grabbed a taxi and flew back to Toronto! What a crazy but yet amazing day! Waking up that morning I had no idea what was in store for me! I was so surprised and for anyone that knows me (even slightly) knows that I need to be in control of everything or at least have a grasp of what's going on. The fact that he was able to pull this whole thing off - flying in to New York City, arriving safely during the storm (which later I found out was terrifying and one of the last flights to arrive in NYC that day), coordinating the whole event with my work/co-workers weeks before without me having any inkling whatsoever is incredible. All these obstacles were able to be pulled off which shows we are truly meant to be! I always knew he loved me a lot but the proposal went beyond anything I ever imagined or dreamed of as a little girl! I am so happy to have Paul as my fiancé and cannot wait until our Wedding Day: September 17th, 2011! |
