Me and C met on a blind date on Friday the 13th in 2013, after being matched on Tinder. We were both a little nervous about the date, since this was the first time experimenting with dating apps for the both of us. Little did we know that this was going to be our last first date - and we keep laughing about how Friday the 13th is our lucky day (and 13 our lucky number!).
We are an unexpected match since we come from opposite ends of the world, me from Iceland and him from Australia, but we are the perfect fit for each other and share a common love for the world. Exactly 3 years after our first date, C woke me up with a cheeky smile and a huge present, which turned out to be a very heavy safe that was locked with a number combination. He then handed me a beautiful card, wishing me a happy anniversary and explained that I would be receiving clues throughout the day regarding how to open the safe. To top it off, I was not allowed to let the safe out of my sight so I dragged the safe with me to work, creating a lot of excitement with my colleagues (and basically everyone that walked past me that day). The first clue arrived after lunch, a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered to my desk along with a card that had the number "1" tied to it. The card talked about how I would always be his number 1, his 1 priority and the only 1 for him. (The card also included some nerdy mathematical facts about the number 1 which I loved - we're both Engineers so we like to nerd out together). The second clue arrived shortly after I finished work. C took me (and the safe) to a wine bar and as the waiter was bringing me an appetizer plate, he very smoothly pulled out a little card from beneath the plate. That card had the number "6" tied to it and C described how he had rolled a 6 when he met me, how we moved in together after only 6 months and of course - how mathematically 6 is the perfect number! ? At that point I started suspecting there wasn't just a normal anniversary present in the safe, and I couldn't wait for more clues. We walked down to a nearby restaurant that we both love and sat down for a lovely meal (and of course, always carrying the safe). As the waiter was bringing us some macaroons for dessert, I noticed another card under the macaroons. That card had the number "9" tied to it and reading it brought me to tears - C talked about how it would take 9 months for us to create our own little family and how he couldn't wait to experience that with me. Hand in hand, we left the restaurant and I could tell that this adventure was about to reach its peak. We walked past a cute little skating rink which was all lit up with Christmas lights. C casually asked if we should go skating, so we rented some skates and skated around in our fancy outfits (and with our safe). As C is not the best skater I know (seriously, it's like Bambi learning how to walk), he took a break after a few circles and sat down in the middle of the rink. I skated towards him and as I sat down next to him, I noticed another card on the bench - my favorite of them all. That card had the number "0" attached to it and explained how C was nothing without me and how he had 0 doubts about us being together. 0 was how long he wanted to wait before continuing our lives together and this was the final clue to his heart. It took me a moment to realize that I could finally open the safe and I guess I knew there was a big moment to follow. With shaky hands and my heart beating out of my chest, I punched in these four numbers 1-6-9-0 (in the order I had received them). But the safe wouldn't open! C smiled at me and told me he couldn't have made it that easy. He said that with me being the math and board game nerd that I am - I would have to work just a little bit harder to figure out the combination. I nearly screamed and I simply couldn't think straight at that point - I just wanted to open the safe! C told me to think about how long we had been together, and then it hit me - this was a math puzzle! 3 years together is 365 days times 3 plus 1 (2016 was a leap year) equals 1096. I punched in those numbers and a beautiful pink box containing my ring appeared to me, C did a little speech (which is all a big blur to me) and went down on one knee - on his ice skates! I said YES but couldn't stop worrying about him falling over on his skates! Everyone on the skating rink came running to us, applauding and congratulating us. We took a moment to take it all in and then happily walked over to the bar on the next corner for an engagement toast. The exact same bar where we first met 3 years ago <3 |
