At first we didn't see what everyone else was witnessing. Everyone that knew us would tell us how they were watching two friends fall in love. After about a year of late night hang outs and weekend adventures we started to realize that they were right and there was something much more between us. I asked her out on our first date telling her it was a surprise and all she could know was to bring a cocktail dress and be ready at 8 o'clock. A little before 8 she called me and let me know she was ready, I told her to come outside where she was greeted by my friend dressed in slacks and a button up, "Hello Madison, I'm your driver for this evening" she laughed and got in and he drove her to the penthouse suite that another friend let me borrow for the evening. There I was ready with homemade spaghetti (which is a gamble to make on your first date for your lady that comes from an Italian family) and a bottle of our favorite wine. We ate dinner and talked as the sun was setting over the city next to us and right as it was peaking over the horizon I asked her to dance with me to the song Photograph by Ed Sheeran. As we danced to the setting sun she looked into my eyes and I saw in that very moment what it really looks like when someone has truly fallen in love with you. That night I asked her what was the number one thing she's always wanted to do in her life and she answered, "I've always wanted to go to a real Masquerade". This is where the story really starts and at that very moment I knew how I'd ask the most amazing woman to marry me.
Fast forward a year and a half later, she's working as a nurse in the neuro ICU and I've accepted a job as a firefighter, I was ready to put my plan into motion but there's one problem, she always knows when I'm up to something. So I decide I'll drop some breadcrumbs in another direction to make her think she's figured it out. I start initiating the conversation of how I'll propose to her, telling her some of the most outlandish ways and sending her links of the "worst proposals ever", finally she bites and asks me for a hint on how I'm really going to do it. I tell her all I can say is that it'll be a destination proposal. five months pass by and I ask her to send me some ring ideas of what she likes and I very openly let her know I'm meeting with her dad and step-dad, but of course I can't tell her why. In the meantime I have one of her closest friends drop her a fake hint on a lunch date, "All I can say is, have a cute winter jacket handy". A week later I invite her to Leavenworth, Wa for the tree lighting ceremony (a very romantic proposal in and of itself). She takes the bait. She is certain that I will be proposing on Dec. 17th at the tree lighting ceremony in Leavenworth. She tells all of her friends and says I can never know that she has figured everything out. Meanwhile, I have her friend invite her to an underground Masquerade party that is on Dec 16th, a day before we leave for our Leavenworth trip. She has a hookup and can get us on the list if we want. Madi comes home extremely excited and invites me to this Masquerade (little did she know, she just invited me to her very own proposal). I act oblivious and hesitant to attend but she convinces me to go and that it's something she's always wanted to do, I act surprised like I never knew this about her. The day of the event she gets ready for hours, she has a french manicure, hair is done, makeup is on and she's wearing her favorite dress. My plan to have her secretly ready for pictures that I know she'll want has worked. She confides in her friend that she feels bad because she's actually more excited about the Masquerade than the Leavenworth trip (she would later find this hilarious). We arrive and wait in line to get in. We make it in and it's beautiful, a Winters Masquerade that I had taken the day off to setup with the decorations that I've been working on for months. We immediately find an area to sit and have some drinks. After a half hour of hanging out the song comes on that cues everyone that we are to dance. Her friend urges us onto the dance floor and I dance with her so she faces away from everyone else as they fan across the room. As we dance she looks up at me and I tell her how she always gives me that same look when we dance. It's the same look that she gave me on our first date, "The one that is pouring out the love that's indescribable with words, the look that can make me feel like time has stopped and that we're the only two people in a crowded room." That's the second cue, the DJ mixes in our song and I turn her around, she sees everyone in the entire building is now looking at us and I drop to one knee. I keep quite and look at her recognizing all the faces in the masks. It clicks. The masquerade that she invited me to, the one thing she's always wanted to do, it was all for her and every single person in this room were our friends and family from the doorman and the people standing in line to the DJ. She looks down at me overwhelmed with emotion and staring back at her is her dream ring. She says yes and now this ICU nurse and Firefighter are engaged! |
