My name is Megan McLaren and my fiancée Graeme Jamieson and I got engaged on October 27, 2015. Our story begins ten years ago on the dance floor of our high school Halloween ball when we were only 15 years old. After having been friends for a year already, we became much closer in the tenth grade. During the Halloween dance on October 27, 2005 Graeme asked me to be his girlfriend and we have been happily together since. Following high school, we attended university together in Ottawa. When it was time to look into grad schools, Graeme had encouraged me to travel far and wide and I landed in Vancouver and we had a long distance relationship that last for one year before he came out for his own studies. We moved in together and adopted a wonderful Norwegian Forest cat named Mo. On October 25th 2015, Graeme and I left for Maui to celebrate our ten year anniversary. We decided to drive to Lahaina on the 27th for a nice dinner out to celebrate our decade. We spent the day deciding where we wanted to eat and drove home to get dolled up. As I was blow drying my hair I started to get nervous. I didn't know if Graeme was going to propose and I was nervous for either outcome. We left for Lahaina with enough time to pull over on the highway and watch the sun go down. At mile marker 12 between Kihei and Lahaina, Graeme pulled over on the beach so we could take a picture together and watch the sunset. By this time, my stomach was in my ears. He set the camera up on a horizontal branch and turned on the auto timer. The first picture was captured - the lighting was poor. Sweat began to gather at my hair line. The second picture was captured - Graeme wasn't satisfied with the composition and my knees began to shake like the Mauno Loa was erupting. The third picture was taken and Graeme was on his knee presenting a sparkling diamond ring. I was somehow still shocked, even though the possibility was on my mind for months. I stood there looking at him on one knee and continued to say through tears "Are you sure? Are you sure?". Graeme laughed and asked me if that was a yes, and then slipped the ring on my finger. We took a couple more pictures as a freshly engaged couple and got back in the car to drive to dinner. I was staring at my hand in disbelief and sweating profusely through excruciating cramps. "Graeme, I need you to get me to a Starbucks immediately!" Clenching my butt cheeks together, Graeme drove into the parking lot of a Starbucks I had noticed earlier that day, laughing and shaking his head while I tried to casually get out of the car and ask the teenager working at the coffee shop if I could use the bathroom. "It's outside, past the movie theatre and around the corner". Damn it! I needed to go immediately. I speed walked what felt to be a 900 kilometre stretch to the bathroom the girl had directed me to, teeth shattering and my beautiful dress becoming more and more damp with sweat with every step. I blew through the door to discover a mouldy toilet and a flickering fluorescent bulb swaying on an unreliable-looking chain. I fastened the rickety lock and hurriedly sat down and ... well, you can imagine the rest. While staring at my beautiful ring, I couldn't help but laugh. The best moment of my life ended quickly with a nervous diarrhea. While this is the most embarrassing part of the story, it is also my favourite, because it is a very "us" story. I quite frankly feel dishonest when I leave this part out. Like love and like life, nothing is predictable and we must always take the good with the bad. Life is both ridiculous and hilarious. This story demonstrates my partner's caring and loving nature, as well as his ability to laugh. I am excited to continue my life with someone who doesn't take life too seriously; who loves me no matter if I feel beautiful, humiliated, sick, happy or sad.
