I used to write song mashups for my girlfriend. I would take lines from select songs and mix them up into a new order and new meaning that is special to us. We have known that we are going to get married, we even have the wedding date picked out. December 10, 2016. She knew that at some point I would propose and I knew that she would say yes. So it became a matter of when, where, and how. So I decided to propose on December 10, 2015. Exactly one year before the wedding. I planned to propose and then have a surprise engagement party for her afterwards. I sent out the invites to friends and family. Then everything started to go wrong. She needed knee surgery and the first available day was December 9. Our infant's daycare announced the Christmas concert (our son's first) on December 10. I was determined to keep with this date. The day arrives and my friend (who will be my best man) is supposed to come over with his wife and their newborn. They aren't able to make it. He has the ring! So, we go to the Christmas concert. She's not feeling too well after surgery and wants to go home, but I said I wasn't ready to go home. I wanted to take her to dinner at a friends' restaurant for one of her favorite dishes. We are meeting our friends there (the one who has the ring), surprise. I thought for sure she figured it out. I had an ultimate mash-up that I started to piece together in January from our joint playlist. I started with over 190 pages of lyrics, cut down to one page. We get to the restaurant and the reservation for 15. (She was definitely suspicious at that point). I got her seated and got the ring from my friend. I helped her get her foot situated (comfortable due to the knee surgery) and while bent down, I started into my mash-up proposal. I didn't get through the whole thing. Almost halfway and I froze. I just love this woman so much. So I proposed. And....she said yes!!! | |||||
