1 universe, 9 planets, 809 islands, 204 countries, 7 seas, 50 states, and I was lucky enough to meet you ...
I've always believed in fate, and that what's meant to happen will always find its way. There is no distance too far and no ocean too wide that can keep two hearts from finding each other. After several years of living in Florida, my family decided it was time to move back to Michigan. In January of 2013, I came to Michigan just for a weekend for a few job interviews. My cousin just had a baby boy, so I made a last minute decision to visit the baby. As my cousins and I waited to enter the room, a man walked off the elevator, here to see the same baby. As he said hello to my cousins, I stood in the background, shy and eager to see the baby. He approached me, introduced himself as Klint Kesto, and we all walked toward the room. Only two visitors could go into the room at a time and Klint and I walked in together. While we were in the room together, we briefly started talking. I had no idea the man I met was Klint Kesto, the first Chaldean American to be elected into the House of Representatives, just a few months before. He asked me where I lived, and if I planned to move back to Michigan. Luckily enough, after months of job hunting I found a job, and my brother and I moved back in March of 2013. Fast-forward to April 2013, Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers. As Michigan custom entails, we were downtown, with thousands of people, and guess who I run into? Yes-Klint! I had no clue he was going to be there nor had I told him I would be there. We were both happy to see one another and started catching up. After talking for some time, we decided to go out for coffee that weekend. As time progressed, we continued talking and became closer friends, wanting everything to happen naturally and the right way. We supported one another and understood that we were both busy. Despite this, we always made time for each other and just naturally became close as time went by. I helped as much as I could with campaigning that following year. Election Day would be here before we knew. November 4th, 2014: Election Day. After standing outside in the cold and rain from 7:00am - 8:00pm, anxiously waiting for the polls to close, Klint was re-elected to another term! He had been trying for quite some time to get me up to Lansing to visit the House of Representatives. Finally, on Tuesday, December 9th, I was able to make the trip. Klint invited me to the State Capitol to witness a "proclamation." He told me it would mean a lot to him for me to be there, that he had a bill up for a vote, and that he was making a special introduction and was reading a resolution. (That was his cover story anyway). Upon reaching the House floor that morning, I noticed that Klint seemed very nervous and excited at the same time; although I kind of just assumed it was the busyness of his work on the House floor. This was surprising to me because he is a great public speaker; I didn't think this situation would be any different. After being there for a long time as they voted, he finally walked over to the podium and asked me to stand next to him while reading his proclamation. I was slightly shy and told him so; however he encouraged me to come stand next to him while reading the proclamation so he can introduce me. He had a framed tribute as he walked over to the podium and I thought it was business as usual. The crowd was just buzzing around as the session day was ending, and then Klint started reading his "proclamation." After a few lines, I realized it was a proclamation of his love to me! I was shocked, surprised, and honored all at once. The rest of the Representatives started gathering around in a circle as they too started to see what was going on! As he continued to read this proclamation of love, we both got emotional, reminiscing on all that we've been through together. Through teary eyes, Klint proceeded by getting down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him in marriage. The crowd started cheering with excitement. One Representative even shouted "Oh my God - He is proposing!" My heart was filled with joy as I gave him my answer - I nodded my head and said "Yes." "Mr. Speaker, I think she said yes!" Klint shouted back through the microphone. The Speaker of the House gave his congratulations as well! Photographers and videographers were standing around us. The rest of the House Of Representatives were applauding. My heart was beating tremendously with joy and excitement. I didn't realize it would later be on the local news stations, all over social media, YouTube, and reaching other states around the country. I'm certain the greatest moment, though, was capturing my astonished and amazed look when I discovered my family members standing in the balcony, witnessing the entire thing. Secretively, they had all been told to be present for this moment without me knowing. The Michigan House has passed many great proposals, but this will be one of the best proposals that the Michigan House has passed during session, and one that I will always be proud of. After all, Governor Rick Snyder even sent out a Twitter message congratulating us! Even the clerk of the House that has worked there for many many years before said this has never happened in Michigan history. We are looking forward to sharing this story, along with the videos and articles, with our children one day. More than anything, my favorite thing about the proposal is that two best friends are marrying one another, knowing we make a great team together. There is nothing better than spending your life with your best friend. The part that completes you, the one you laugh, cry, smile and argue with, go through so many ups and downs together, yet still come out stronger than before. Nothing can separate the special bond we've shared and will continue to share throughout our life together. After all is said and done, what is meant to happen will always find its way and it sure did with us. See the actual proposal: To read the news article, click here |
