How We Met: We met through a mutual friend and agreed to go to dinner at the Spanish Flower in downtown Houston. She was working a lot of hours at Minute Maid park where she directed the club level. It was the beginning of baseball season so I knew she was extremely busy. I was working lots of hours as a special education teacher and football coach at a very successful program. We hit it off very quickly and I knew she was different from the first time she opened her mouth (along with her beautiful smile). Things continued to go smoothly even though we had very demanding hours. Every chance she got, she drove the hours drive to my home to spend time with me, which did not go unnoticed. I told her if she "survived" the football season with my long hours and dealing with a frustrated coach after a bad practice or game, that she would be a keeper. She was my biggest fan, and she passed the challenge with flying colors.
How I asked: I decided to get the football players involved with my proposal for two reasons: 1) I spend many hours with these kids in and out of the season, and they are a big part of my life 2) I wasn't too fond of the typical proposal because it just wasn't our style. So, I called a team meeting during the football period and started the meeting with "I've been here for seven years and I think its time for a change. Change is always good." The players looked at me with a saddened look, thinking that I might be leaving the program, but instead, I explained to them I wanted them to be involved with my proposal to my girlfriend. The room erupted with emotion and excitement. After I calmed them down (after 10 full minutes) I gave them the game plan. The plan was to have a fake fight, just to grab her attention, because I knew she wouldn't watch a regular practice. I would build up the fight with her throughout the week after it happened so it will keep her interest. The kids followed through with the plan perfectly and didn't a great job of acting as you can see on the video. The video continues with me calling up the group and having them take a knee all at the same time. I took my jacket off to reveal a shirt and tie (with my coaching shorts on) and held up a sign I made a day prior that said, "Vee, will you marry me?" The video was then revealed to her on a Saturday (2 days after we recorded it). I set up my Ipad to record her reaction. Once the sign was shown on the video, I got down on a knee next to her in the kitchen and proposed. Her reaction was priceless, but yet nerve racking because I was waiting for what seemed like an eternity. She finally said yes and the game plan was labeled a SUCCESS! |
