From the very first day Jan and I have been together, she has been able to read me like a book; she knew about every surprise birthday I have tried to plan for her and every gift I have given her. She was so confident that she knew me so well and that she knew exactly when and how I was going to propose to her. Yes, in the case of Jan and I, it was never and if, but rather a when and how. I promised her that when the time came, she wouldn't have a single clue.
Planning something that Jan won't pick up on is hard enough, but to plan something that would change her life, our lives, forever, really packed on the pressure. I started planning months in advance to make sure everything went according to plan. I wanted to propose somewhere memorable, and after months of thinking I finally decided on the lake. Jan and I used to spend a lot of time going for long walks by the beaches or by the harbour front where we would sit and watch the boats, when I used to visit her after work or school. We had always discussed renting a boat on the lake but never really got around to it. I decided that this would be the best way to propose; on a bright sunny day, on boat on Lake Ontario, with the beautiful downtown skyline behind us. Now the real planning began, I knew how I was going to propose, I just had to set the plan in motion. If people know Jan, then they know how much she loves to take pictures. If Jan could have it her way, her whole life would be documented in a series of photo albums and videos. Keeping this in mind, I knew it would only be right if I captured the proposal on film. Naturally for this, I turn to my best friend and best man, Mike. I explained my plan to him, which also included getting the ring. Seeing as Mike's dad is an amazing jeweller, and they are like my second family, it only made sense to go to Mr. Gurey with such an important decision. Once I had the location and ring in check, the next thing, rather the most important thing was to get Jan's parent's blessing. About a month before I planned on proposing, I asked Mom and Dad to meet me at the coffee shop after work. I could see Mom try to fight back tears from the moment she sat down as I'm sure they both knew what I was going to ask them. Thankfully, Dad seemed to think I was worthy enough to have his daughter's hand in marriage. I spent the next few weeks going over the proposal with Mike, to make sure I took care of every little detail, right down to the champagne and flutes I was going to smuggle onto the boat in my water bottle. I didn't want to leave any loose ends that could spark Jan's speculations so I came up with a story that Mike's boss had passes for a power boating excursion that he was unable to make use of, so he gave them to Mike and since there were 4 passes, Mike and his wife Melissa, had invited us to come along. The day finally came, and let me tell you, August 17th 2013, is the most nerve wrecking day I have experienced so far. I prayed, as I paced around, that everything would go according to plan. Of course there was one thing I forgot to take into account ...Jan is the reason the term Indian Standard Timing exists ... as in she is always late, even when she starts early, she is "fashionably" late. We ended up being stuck on the highway due to midday traffic, which kicked my nerves into high gear; but thankfully we were only 10-15 minutes behind schedule. When we got into our boats, Jan started her usual bit of taking pictures of anything and everything she could find; utterly clueless of the fact that Mike and I were scouting out the picture perfect backdrop for the proposal. When I finally found the spot, I stopped the boat, pulled the ring box out of my pocket and hopped on the hood. Jan was totally unaware of what was going on; assuming that I was pulling one of my stunts just to irritate her; she kept yelling at me because she was scared I was going to fall into the lake. I got down on bended knee and then she finally realized what was happening. She gasped and then covered her face with her somewhat trembling hands. I smiled and confidently asked "Janice Rosy Francisca Teresa Rebello will you marry me?" She silently sat there for a split second, completely stunned about what just happened. I kept my position on bended knee as the waves slightly rocked the boat. I thought to myself ...this is probably not the best time for you to be silent babe (and if you know Jan, you know it doesn't happen too often) She then snapped out of her shock and shirked "YES!" I put the ring on her finger, and got back into the boat, which was follwed by more of her gasping and shrieking. Needless to say, the rest of our boat tour, of the Toronto islands, was a write off. I happily sipped my champagne and looked over at my fiancé, in her own world, calling her family and snapping pictures of her ring in various angles, with different backdrops of the skyline. When we finally got off the boat, I looked at her and smiled ..."I told you I would surprise you". Here's the video: |
