The first time I saw Marc was in Mr. Wilcox's 6th grade class. I was 11 years old and until that moment, I didn't know what it felt like to have a crush. But seeing his curly brown hair, green eyes, and sweet smile made my young heart started to pound, and I knew he would be my first crush. He was also my first kiss (December 15, waiting for the school bus), my first dance (the Valentine's Dance in 7th Grade), my first date (we saw the Waterboy at the local movie theatre).
We dated for 9 months, which was an eternity for 12 year olds. It ended as things normally do when you are so young, but we remained good friends. Marc coached my high school hockey team, he taught to shoot a puck, and also managed to literally skate circles around me! He called me every single Christmas morning, he always kept in touch, and we built a friendship that can only be developed over knowing each other for years. When we left for separate universities, although distance and time kept us apart, we always got together at every opportunity to go to a hockey game, see a movie, or catch up over dinner. Four years went by with us living in different cities, until the summer of 2009 when we both moved home after graduation. I'll never forget the dinner we had, we went out for chicken wings, and I'm sure I had wing sauce all over my face. Marc mentioned that he was going to a cottage for the long weekend, and asked if I had plans. I didn't yet, and he said, "Well, why don't you come to the cottage with me?". Until that moment, the feelings I had when I was 11 had stayed suppressed. But with the prospect of spending an entire weekend away with him, I felt my heart start to flutter, and I knew this could be the start of something amazing. We went to the cottage together, and one night we decided to go jump into the lake. It was when we were freezing cold, dripping wet, and floating in the water when we had our first kiss as adults...and that was our last first kiss. Three years went by, and on April 14, 2013, Marc took me back to the elementary school where we first met. I had told him that nostalgia was one of those feelings that made me sad, that remembering the past made me miss it. He took me there saying we had such good memories, and wanted me to remember that nostalgia can be a good feeling. We started to walk around the school yard which has been rebuilt since we attended the school, and he pulled on the doors to see if was unlocked. I laughed at him because it was a Sunday and I knew it wouldn't be open. As we rounded the corner, there was a massive board that he had built with a heart made of wood that showed pictures from the past and present, and then he got down on one knee and promised me the future. I was so completely surprised, and still to this day can't remember everything he said because my brain literally shut off and all I could say was YES! In 2014, we will be married and I can't wait to call him my husband. We have loved each other since we were 11 years old, and marrying my best friend is the best thing I could ask for. |
