"A long time ago I told you I would get in your boat, now I want to know if you will get in mine. Michelle, will you marry me?"
*** A young couple are standing together at the top of a cliff, hand in hand. The heat of the day is warming them, sparkling waters glisten in the sunlight far, far below. This place is special to them both, but today is has a new magic. Michelle senses Jim's unease and offers him a reassuring smile, not quite knowing what is about to happen. Jim reaching into his pocket slowly, and eases down to one knee. He looks up into Michelle's excited and expectant face watching her eyes dart between him and the ring he's clasping between his fingers. Michelle is beaming, and as she shouts "Yes" the sun glints off her new favorite gem - the one marking the first day of a new chapter of her life. Now, there's something you need to know to understand why Jim is asking Michelle to get into his boat. Of course neither of them actually owns a boat of any kind, not even a canoe, not a paddle boat, not even a remote control boat. There's no boat. The boat is a metaphor. Both Michelle and Jim had been on the dating "scene" for quite some time. They'd both suffered their challenges in relationships and neither one had found a suitable life partner or sailboat captain. Nearer the beginning of their relationship, at the point where Michelle and Jim began spending a lot of time together it didn't take long for Jim to realize that he wanted to get more serious with Michelle. He told her "Michelle, I've met a lot of girls whose boat I would never get into - they all look like they are about to fly over Niagara Falls. But if I was going down the river in my boat and you said 'Hey Jim, do you want to get in my boat?' I would get in. Because Michelle, your boat is dependable and it's not headed for the edge" And so, Jim stepped into Michelle's boat and they sailed down this river for a while. As we all know, rivers meander; take twists and turns, have calm and rapid waters. Michelle and Jim's journey was no different. At one point in the river, Jim leaped out of the boat. He confessed to Michelle that he was not ready to be in a relationship. Michelle's heart broke, although unbeknownst to her at the time, he was holding the rope to her boat, guiding it along the river from shore. During this time, Michelle managed to coax Jim back into her boat through demanding he return a towel he'd borrowed from her. Towels are important on boats and apparently Michelle was at a shortage. Once Jim was back safely in the boat, dry and with plenty of towels, he felt it was time to tell Michelle just how he felt about her. Picture a very nervous man, stumbling over his words and you will have a moderate sense of how his words came out: "Michelle, I, I, I LLLllllllll .... Lub everything about you" Michelle responded coyly "I lub you too, Jim" and so the lubers sailed down the river some more, to the point where they were able to articulate more clearly their feelings. It was love. Love on a boat in a river. The two have come to depend on each other greatly as both have faced significant challenges in their recent lives. They support each other, love each other and most importantly they are committed to throwing a life preserver to the other should they fall overboard. What more could you want? This beautiful journey down the river began with a simple "Hello" on Plenty of Fish. Without Plenty of Fish, Michelle and Jim would have never met, their meandering journey never realized and their lub-love never found. Now, Michelle will confess she was initially attracted to the picture of Jim's dog in his profile picture on the dating site. But that is another story. |
