I met Bryce four years ago, but we didn't start dating until two years ago. I had moved from Ottawa, Ontario to small town Brandon, Manitoba for school, and he had grown up in Brandon. He was known around school for being a wilderness guy, into hunting, fishing, and all things nature - I am the city girl to his country boy. Needless to say, when we started dating he wanted to share all the wonders of nature with me. I had never even fished before dating him, so I was in for many surprises! We went bear watching (climbing 20 +ft trees so the bears wouldn't see us), moose and deer hunting, fishing, elk calling (which entailed biking 10 km into the forest and hiking another 5km to see the elk), and I got to learn a variety of animal calls. We were definitely an odd couple. These things were easy for him to do, but as a sheltered city girl, I found myself struggling to keep up with him. I'd get tangled up in many bushes, hyperventilate while climbing very tall trees, and fall off my bike into thistle bushes. I love him like crazy though, so I was prepared to endure all these strange trips.
This winter, when he asked if I wanted to go cross-country skiing (I have never skied) I didn't think twice about it. I thought we were just going on another adventure. Off we went into the hills. As a beginner though, I found the track very challenging, and was falling, slipping and rolling down each hill. Eventually I was just getting so angry and upset I couldn't ski at all. I took off my skis and decided to walk the rest of the way. Bryce was trying to lighten my mood, telling me that he wanted this to be a "special day". I definitely didn't clue in that this was actually a SPECIAL day, my thoughts didn't even drift to thinking he would actually propose. Near the end of the trail there was a small cabin, and he suggested we take a rest break. Begrudgingly I let him lead me in and we took a seat to warm up. I had already said several times, "This is the WORST day", and "This isn't fun at all!" knowing I was just whining, but it did feel like a bad day! I wanted to do a good job and impress him, and the only thing I could to is fall and roll down each hill! It was embarrassing. I had turned to look out the window, and when I turned back to Bryce, he was kneeling in front of me with a ring! I was in shock! He asked, "will you marry me?" and I started bawling uncontrollably. I blame it partially on my heightened emotions from being upset prior to that, but also because I was so surprised! Immediately after, he said, "This was the worst proposal ever! I should've taken you somewhere that you love!". I didn't care though. My worst day had turned into the best day! I assured him that I was so happy, but I was not going to put those skis on to finish the trail! He walked back with me, instead of skiing back. It figures he would've proposed in the forest, since he is my nature man! It may have not been the most ideal or romantic proposal, but it was a surprise (which is the best!) and now we have a funny story to share with friends and family. I wouldn't have changed a thing!! |
