History:
My fiancé and I have been dating each other for about 6 years, we met at the University of Guelph first year and have been together ever since. Matt and I had talked about getting married but it was never serious until this past December 2012. Matt asked me if I would go engagement ring shopping with him so I was very excited. After trying on rings and deciding on ones we liked or disliked, Matt assured me that an engagement was out of the question right now because of us both being in school (for our second round of post-secondary education). The engagement: I was trying to figure out some plans with friends for New Years Eve and kept asking Matt's opinion about which we should go to. Matt kept brushing it off and said, "we should do something just us." Matt and I had gone to Nathan Phillips the previous year (2011) to watch the fireworks at midnight so I hesitantly agreed after turning down my friend's plans. Matt told me to be ready by noon on New Years Eve. He picked me up that day and took me out to see a movie, afterwards he took me out to a nice dinner. At dinner he was acting strangely, overly-smiley and complementing, but I brushed it off as being for the excitement of the ball dropping. We left the restaurant and made our way to Downtown Toronto. We would arrive a bit early so we both decided that we would walk around, grab a coffee and enjoy the nice weather. We walked around for about 2 hours when we arrived in front of the Parliament buildings. It was all dressed up in lights for Christmas and it had just started snowing. Matt got down on his knee and my heart started racing. Little did I know, he was getting down to tie his shoe. We both had a laugh at that moment and continued on our walk. We had looped around Toronto making our way back to my favourite Christmas tree. We had gone here the year before and there was something magical about how the tree lit up amongst the snow. Matt suggested we sit down and take some pictures of the tree, and I agreed. We sat there taking some snapshots and we realised we were completely alone at this tree in this big over-populated city. Matt scooted closer beside me. He started unzipping his jacket and unzipped a small pocked on the sweater he was wearing. At that moment, I knew what was happening. He explained why he had been anxious all night because he had been wanting to do something for 6 years now. He got down on one knee in front of me - I can't honestly remember everything he said in the shock of the moment- but he told me he loved me and wanted to be with me forever- that he couldn't picture his life without me and asked me to be his wife. I immediately started crying in excitement and completely forgot to give him my answer. He had to ask me again and I said yes! I called my friends and family right after it happened, as tears were still streaming down my face, (most of them thought I had been in an accident). I told them about the proposal and that we are getting married and they were all so excited for us!! After I said yes, Matt decided to celebrate in his own special way, he made his way to a street vendor and got a hot-dog and fries. We made our way to Nathan Phillips and rang in the New Year as a Newly Engaged couple. It was an amazing night that I will never forget. |
