My name is Nikki Charbonneau and my fiance is Adam Bowman. This is our Proposal Story (August 1st, 2010)
Adam and I met in our first year of school through friends and have been dating for 6 years. During our relationship we have gone to school together, worked together and traveled together. We had gone to jewellry stores so Adam could get an idea of what my style was. We both work for not-for-profit organizations involving animals so I wanted something that I could wear to work comfortably everyday. Several special occasions had came and went and I was still waiting for a ring. Adam and I have worked at an all-girls summer camp in Maine running their Equestrian department together the last few years. During this time at camp is when we both really realized that we make a great team and that we were made for eachother. This summer we were not able to return as staff as we had full time jobs in Ontario. Adam returned at the beginning of camp as a consultant for 2 weeks. After he came home, I was feeling jealous that he was able to visit our "summer home" as well as staff and campers so we decided to go for a visit on the long weekend. When we arrived I discovered that Adam would be the guest speaker at Sunset Circle, a regular camp fire where all camp comes together to talk about important values and their significance at camp. He had prepared his talk and had practiced with me but was still nervous to give his talk to all of camp. Adam decided to talk about Friendship. He opened with a beautiful poem called "A Friend's Prayer". He went on to talk about the importance of friends and how friends at camp are like family. He then began speaking of his best friend and how our relationship had developed over the past 6 years. As he was continuing speaking of our past together he began fumbling through his papers and mumbled that he must have forgotten one. I felt horrible for him since I knew that he had already been so nervous about speaking to such a large group. He said he forgot it in his sweater, which was on the bench next to me and asked me to bring it down to the centre of the circle. I brought the sweater down and opened the paper at his request. I read "MARRY ME NIKKI" in red ink and turned a matching shade. Adam got down on one knee and opened the ring box. The ring was a beautiful custom made design with his grandmother's stone as the centre stone. He had taken the style that I loved and worked with a jeweller to make it work perfectly in my work environment. With all 300 campers cheering and crying tears of joy, I said "Yes" and we shared our first kiss as an engaged couple surrounded by our camp "family". Here is the video of our proposal: |
