Tim and I met in a world religion's class in grade eleven of high school after having mutual friends for the first two years but never running into each other. I started to develop feelings for him and began to find ways to talk to him and get to know him better. We were both interested in music, with me in choir and him in the band. So it was a perfect moment when he also joined choir. I finally got the courage to ask for his email and we started corresponding over email for quite a few months. One day, on April 20, 2006, I went to check my email and found one from Tim that had six words that would change our lives forever, "Will you go out with me?" Of course I replied with an astounding "yes!" and as many will say the rest is history.
I had never had a boyfriend, and he had never had a girlfriend so everything was new to both of us. After six months of dating we started holding hands, and at Christmas of our first of year of dating we kissed for the first time. We continued to grow both as friends and partners. Eventually we graduated high school and ended up going to the same university. During our second year of university we began to talk about marriage, as we had both realized that this was it. We could not picture our lives without the other person in it. However, we decided to wait until at least one of us was done university before we got engaged. Fast forward to April 2012. At this point we had been dating for almost 6 years and had picked out an engagement ring together (even though I was just going along to show him the styles I liked). April 20, 2012: Our 6 year anniversary. I was studying for my last undergraduate exam ever and got a text from Tim telling me to let him know when I was done my exam because his brother had bought us dinner to celebrate our anniversary. I said, "ok" and went back to studying. My phone was running out of battery so I decided to turn it off until after my exam so that I would let him know when I was heading home (we were living with his brother in a student house). I finished my exam and went to turn on my phone but the battery was dead so I just decided to go home anyway and got a ride from a friend. When I arrived home the door was locked and after I tried to unlock it numerous times and knocked on it, his brother came to the door and said I wasn't allowed to come in yet. So impatiently I waited, completely clueless, just thinking he was finishing up dinner to surprise me for our anniversary. Finally I was allowed to go inside and when I opened the door the stairway was lined with flowers and lit candles, which were positioned in a pathway to my bedroom. At this point I was realizing that I might be in the middle of my proposal and started to get really excited. I reached my bedroom door and found the door closed with a printed email stuck to it. It spoke of our journey as a couple and at the end it said "Take a deep breath. This is your moment. Enjoy it. Remember it. Cherish it. When you are ready, step through the door." And so I opened the door and found him on one knee, and he spoke four words that again would change our lives forever, "Will you marry me?" and once again, of course, I said "YES!". I put the ring on my finger, and we danced to "Tale as Old as Time" from Beauty and the Beast. |
