Mark and I met in the summer of 2007. I had just moved out to Halifax to study at Dalhousie University. I met Mark through my Katima-friend Sam, and we started hanging out on a regular basis. We both love the outdoors, so we spent a lot of time hiking, camping and geocaching all over Nova Scotia. Shortly after I started school, we officially started going out and our adventures in Eastern Canada continued.
Then in July of 2011, Mark started acting a little weird. I knew something was up, but he maintained that it was nothing. One Friday night in August, Mark called up and asked if I wanted to go to our favourite restaurant Gingergrass, and of course I said yes. After eating, he suggested going for a hike. Now, I did think this was a little weird, because it was a bit late in the day, but it was a beautiful Friday night so I thought, why not? We drove out to Purcell's Cove which has a beautiful trail with rocky cliffs that's right beside the ocean. We often went there to watch and listen to the roar of the waves, and just relax. Mark asked me if I wanted to do some geocaching, so we started searching for a nearby cache that he had information on. Mark's information led us to the highest cliff that overlooks the ocean, and he said that it was quite close by. So I kept scrambling and poking in among the rocks, until finally I found a black container. I popped it open and there was a note inside that read: Dear Stephanie, I wanted to tell you that I'm so happy to be with you; you're an amazing girlfriend. You have an incredible sense of adventure, a brilliant mind, and the way you smile has brought me so much joy. It was at this very place where I first told you I loved you, so it only seems fitting that I now ask you to look at the ocean, now back to me .... And, I turned around, and there was Mark down on one knee, with a custom made diamond ring, asking me to marry him. Apparently, I squeaked or something before I said: damn right, yes! Definitely the best hike and geocaching experience we've had, and the best proposal I could've ever hoped for! |
