Antonella Cumbo

I have been practicing my craft for 14+ years, I strive to give each individual a unique personalized experience. And always keeping up to date on trends and fashion.

I started my career as a co-op student right out of high school. At the time I didn’t know I wanted to do hair for a living, until one day I sat in on an “updo” class and absolutely fell in love with the art of styling. It was then when I realized that I wanted to make woman feel and look beautiful. Over the years of hairstyling, woman have been afraid to get updos for the fear of not liking it, or ending up with the dreaded “prom hair”. I made it my mission to make sure I offer a unique style of consultation that includes vision crafting, and face shape analysis to determine the best look for their face and body type. This always works. And most often they end up wearing it for a few days!

We are determined to serve our Brides above and beyond a hair styling vendor, to truly exceed all expectations and elevate their Bridal Hair experience. A relaxed and professionally executed wedding morning leads to a beautifully styled Bride, and Bride who feels beautiful fully enjoys her special day with confidence and less stress.

I’m Annika, and I am the owner and lead stylist at AnnimationsMkUp. I received my Cosmetic Techniques and Management Diploma with Honors at Seneca College in 2010 which included a course on Formal Hair Styling, and have trained with Schwarzkopf trained stylists over the years, attending many workshops and classes to hone and develop my techniques. AnnimationsMkUp stylists pride themselves on being able to work with a client’s hair, encouraging it to behave and style with shine and volume that surprises and excites each of our Brides. Creating the appearance of length and volume especially in romantic updos have become a key style we are known for.
We believe each Bride is adorned with an invisible “Mrs.” crown on the day of her wedding, and we are constantly refining our skills and training to ensure that crown sits on the most beautiful head of hair that is designed with the Bride in mind. Our extensive questionnaire and consultation process dives deep into the Bride’s theme, style, her hair’s condition, her vision, and allows us to create a look to not only perfectly tie all of those elements together, but to help each Bride improve her hair care routine and offer services and products to do so, making her vision of her day a reality.

Beyond the trial and day of styling, we offer booking for Ayurvedic hot oil scalp massage to improve scalp health and hair growth, as well as having stylists on our team who are fully licensed to cut, colour, and treat hair with products such as Olaplex. We also work with highly-regarded and fully licensed extensionists and high-quality extension suppliers to offer our Brides every possible avenue to achieve the look they are going for.
Additionally, we work with various bridal accessory retailers to assist our Brides with final touches for their look if they so need it.

I specialize in blonding and bridal. Doing hair is my passion. It’s something I crave doing when I’m away from the chair for a long period of time. I feel it is important to continue my education, to keep up with the latest trends, and to use my knowledge to create exactly what my clients are envisioning. I strive to create a true connection with each client, and making them happy is what is most important to me. My goal is to make you feel pampered, relaxed, and like you can be your true self while in my chair. My favourite part about my career is seeing my clients grow. From graduating school, to landing that new job, to having children, or tying the knot with your best friend. It truly is a privilege when my clients ask me to be a part of their big day. Making someone feel beautiful on one of the most important days of their lives is a feeling you almost can’t describe. Hair is such an important part in someone’s life, and being able to make people feel like the best version of themselves is a blessing. Being a stylist is something I wouldn’t change for the world.

I am the youngest sibling in a large family so I participated in multiple weddings from a young age and getting my hair styled was my favourite part. I always appreciated the stylists who were perceptive and creative and as a result those are the attitudes I bring with me to each session. In elementary school I would get up early just to curl or style my hair before heading to school. I understand the confidence and happiness that comes from a good hair day.

Before pursuing my career as a bridal hairstylist, I attended university and I received my Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree. I completed my program as a nurse and immediately began working towards my passion- bridal hair! My nursing education taught me so much- including the importance of good communication and careful organization, which are skills that I bring with me behind the chair to every style I create. My passion for bridal hair has only grown since I began. I am constantly expanding my knowledge of different hairstyles and techniques through advanced education from professionals across the globe.

My goal is to work closely with each bride to ensure a special experience from the time you inquire through to your big day!

Hair is my passion. I live and breathe to create with hair. I love the feeling  of being able to make someone else feel pretty or beautiful or just to feel good about themselves. I have been blessed with opportunities to work on dozens of published photoshoots and with some of Toronto’s most established and talented photographers. I have also had the blessing and opportunity to work on an Independent Film and on a couple TV Shows. I was most recently the Key Hairstylist for Top Chef Canada. I love all aspects of hair. There is just something so special about having a person choose you to do their hair for their wedding day. One of the most important days in a persons life. To be invited to be apart of something so special truly is such an amazing feeling.

Although, I do hair in many different capacities, doing Bridal Hair will always be one of my favourite things to do. It’s so special to be able to do hair for someone on their wedding and have your work be in their photos for the rest of the lives. Then to receive such wonderful and kind words of thanks in thank you cards and reviews from Brides, it’s very touching. And even more so, to build not only client relationships with these people but lifelong friendships also. It’s a wonderful career and creative life to be apart of. I am grateful for all of my clients and for all of the amazing opportunities that I have been blessed with. Every time a bride decides that I am worthy to be apart of their special day, I am on a mission to do everything I can to make them the happiest possible with me and my work. Even though this pandemic has caused some set backs for 2020 Brides, 2021 holds a lot of potential and I hope to help a lot of brides and be privileged enough to be apart of many weddings in the coming years.

I’ve always loved painting and for me it was a world that reminded me of that similarity of art and creativity that captures the beauty and glory of what the hair industry represents. Over the years with education and experience I have grown even fonder of this industry as I’ve learned to keep up to date with the latest trends and styles to make my clients feel their absolute best as that being my absolute goal. My work has been displayed in bridal magazines, recognized in the beauty industry and acknowledged by celebrity hairstylists but personally for me my proudest accomplishment and joy comes in that very moment when a client sits on my chair and walks out not only looking absolutely beautiful externally but feels it even more internally. To have my clients share their life, journey and hardships with me is an honor and privilege as it motivates me to keep striving not only to expand and flourish  in this industry but to make a difference in someone’s life. The hard work, the sacrifice and long hours make it all worth it even after so many years.

FAQ – Hairstylists

How do I communicate what I want to my hairstylist?

The best way to communicate what exact hairstyle you want is by showing photos. Make sure to do your research and find some inspiration on Instagram or Pinterest. Having a clear idea of what you want will make it a lot easier for the hairstylist to find the hairstyle you want and will make the entire process much smoother.

What should I research to prepare for my appointment?

When finding the perfect hairstyle for you, you need to first find some inspiration. This means going on Instagram or Pinterest and finding what other people have done for their wedding and find a hairstyle you can picture yourself in. It is important to find a couple pictures as sometimes the look doesn’t always turn out as you planned. Another thing to keep in mind is the style and neckline of your dress. Do you research about the different styles of necklines and what hairstyles look best paired up with the dress.

With over 20 years of experience in Bridal Makeup Artistry, I have had the opportunity to work with various brides, from different cultures, all with their own unique vision of how they want to look for their big day. This job has taken me to different countries, and allowed me to become such a crucial part of someone’s special day. I work together with my brides to come up with the perfect vision of their Makeup look based on their features, outfits, jewelry, and if they have a theme for their wedding. I specialize in South Asian Bridal Makeup, so we get to create different looks for all the events that take place, which is always so amazing. I have the opportunity to create flawless looks that are both traditional and timeless for a ceremony, to trendy and bold for a reception – giving my brides the best of both worlds. I am obsessed with my brides not only looking amazing, but feeling amazing when they see themselves in the mirror for the first time as a bride. Because of this, I ensure I’m available to them until they are ready to leave for their ceremony. When a bride books her Bridal Makeup with me, they have the comfort in knowing I will be there, by their side the entire time.

Aside from Bridal Makeup, I enjoy creating bold makeup looks on myself to share on my social media. This helps me to not only practice different techniques, but it allows me to keep up-to-date on the latest makeup trends. Makeup has been a passion for me for as long as I can remember, and creating various looks on myself has really helped showcase my talents, continue to learn, and step out of my comfort zone. Combined with my experience and passion, my makeup brushes welcome every bride to come sit in my chair.

We specialize in airbrush foundation. It is our trademark as Airbrush Angels. The art of creating a flawless look is our staple. I can’t even begin to explain how much the art of makeup means to me. Growing up with a skin condition I had my first makeup experience when I was 16 years old and it truly changed and shaped my life. The way I felt after looking in the mirror was magical. When I first opened Makeup Worx and made the decision to work for myself, I never imagined I would stand along such an incredible team of talent 11 years later. We truly love what we do. Making our brides shine and smile is what we live for.

Through dedication, hard-work, respect and love for our clients, brides and team I am so proud of what we have accomplished together. The mere smile after a grand reveal, the hair toss that signifies an instant confidence boost, and the tears of joy to share that you’ve never felt better. This makes our day as much as it makes our brides day.

FAQ – Makeup Artist

What is a bridal makeup trial?

A bridal makeup trial is where we meet for the first time, chat and go over styles/looks you’ve chosen putting them to the test. You should do your research before coming to a bridal makeup trial by finding several photos of looks you want to try. At the bridal makeup trial, your makeup artist will test out the looks to see whether you like it or not. This meeting can take up to a couple hours since it is the time to really get to know your makeup artist. As well as for the makeup artist to get to know you. Your wedding day is a very important day and you want to look as beautiful as possible, so the makeup artist needs to get to know what you like and what you feel confident in.

How long before the wedding should I book a bridal makeup trial?

You should book the bridal makeup trial around 4-8 weeks before your wedding. Before you book your bridal makeup trial, make sure to have the details of your wedding planned and finalized. This means that you know what your wedding dress looks like, you know the theme of your wedding and the colours of the flowers. This is important because different looks math different colours in your theme. As well as, your bridal gown make a difference as certain makeup looks match better with certain necklines.

Do makeup artists travel to the client for their wedding day?

Most makeup artists offer mobile services meaning they do travel to the client for their wedding day. Check with your makeup artist to see how far they are willing to travel on that day. Some makeup artists even offer mobile services for destination weddings or wedding outside of their city. Although, almost every makeup artist will demand travel fees as is it expensive to travel. Make sure to do your research on different makeup artists to see who is closest or has travel fees that is within your budget. All in all, find a makeup artist that makes you feel beautiful and stress-free.

A positive force, focusing on service and experience for your special day. Best known for capturing a clean, modern look to traditional photos.

My desire to freeze a memory in time, and capture a moment of your life that can be treasured forever, be it a wedding, special event or portrait, is something that has been a driving passion of mine for over 20 years. With so many options and cost effective services available, it can be hard to justify deviating from your local grocery store special photographic package and looking at an established professional photographer. I liken it to buying a car and being okay with the base model or deciding to make a statement, and invest in the luxurious extras that an upgraded vehicle provide. Photography is a fine balance of art, passion and versatility, all attributes that have helped me become one of the biggest names in the photographic Industry in Toronto and the GTA.

Dare to stand out from the crowd, and if you can trust me with the people most precious in your life and the ability to capture their personality in print form, I can promise you that the investments of memories will be one of the best investments you ever make.

My passion and biggest asset is taking the time to make every client comfortable and relaxed before I even pick up the camera. The result? Photos of you that actually look like you at your best! I can prove to you how much you can enjoy having your picture taken. Lifestyle photography is about the experience that happens to be served up along side of some great photos.

Specialties:
Family Photography for families that like to move around and enjoy their photo time, Wedding Photography for couples looking for a mixture of photojournalistic, contemporary and traditional images and Professional Corporate headshots that are far from cheesy and stiff.

When it comes to weddings I am all about the moments and the super fun stuff. We don’t have to spend an hour getting perfectly posed shots – I want to get to the nitty gritty of your day where all the action and love are. Your day is filled with your people who love you. I want to catch those tears, laughter and crazy dance moves with all the people who matter most to you. In fact, I will likely be dancing with you and your guests because when I hear that beat I cannot stop. What I am trying to say is I honestly hope your day isn’t perfect because we’d all get bored. I hope your day is full of moments that you will remember forever and when you look back on the photos I hope your heart is as full then as on the day of your wedding. So let’s get perfectly messy and wild. Let’s laugh, smile, and dance all day.

When I started photographing weddings, I knew that I wanted to make sure that my clients
viewed their photography experience as the last thing they had worry about.

All my clients have taken advantage of the biggest booking gift I offer – their engagement
session. During this session, both bride and groom realize that they rock in front of the camera,
and I learn all about their relationship, what makes them laugh, and which poses bring out their
best features. One of the main reasons that my clients book me is my FULL DAY WEDDING COVERAGE.
Yes, my husband (who works every single wedding with me) and I arrive an hour after the bridal
party members have arrived at their respective getting ready locations and photograph till about
an hour after dinner. This takes a huge decision off their plates, and that just means less stress for
the whole family and bridal party.

The relationship I have built with my couples at this point is
more akin to a friendship than to a business relationship. This means that I pour everything I can
into getting them a gallery they love, especially because it reminds them of their amazing
wedding day, and it includes everything they’ve dreamed of.

My hope is that any #DVIcouple will confidently be able to enjoy the day they marry each
other. And that this will in turn fill their photography experience with uplifting moments
that confirm the knowledge that the bride is the most beautiful woman in the eyes of her
new husband.

We never stop shooting to ensure we capture all the candid moments and raw emotions, and we always strive to deliver you the WOW factor in every moment we capture. We love to play with lights and shadows, reflections, and different angles. We deliver you all the moments you expect, plus many more that you don’t. Diego and I love challenges and a bit of competition, so the morning after each wedding, the first thing Diego and I do is sift through the thousands of images we’ve captured to see who got the winning shot.

Many people ask us how we ended up shooting weddings, and the answer is simple, we really love weddings! So much work goes into planning the perfect wedding day, so many hours are spent making sure everything comes together, so much heart and soul. We know exactly how difficult it can be to plan a wedding, so we want to make your experience with us is as memorable, fun, and stress-free as possible.

We like to think that we are more than just photographers. We are your coaches and lighting experts. We are your best man and maid of honour. We are someone you can relate to and your peace of mind. We are invisible when needed, and visible when you need us. We are there to have fun with you, celebrate with you, and bring out the best in you. We are there to make sure your wedding day is the most memorable day of your life, so when you look back at your wedding photos, 5, 10, 20 years from now, you are not only seeing how you looked on your wedding day, but you are reliving every single moment of your wedding day as if it were just yesterday.

Gillian Foster Photography

Hi! I’m Gillian, a Toronto wedding and lifestyle photographer. I have a BA in Studio Art, with a background in fine art and film photography. I take a documentary approach to capture bright, artistic and candid photos.

After developing my first photograph, I discovered my love for photography in the darkroom at the University of Guelph. My first three years as a photographer were entirely film based. I loved the hands-on aspect of processing and printing my own images. Every correction and adjustment made was done entirely in the darkroom. Film photography introduced me to the importance of colour and light – my main sources of inspiration.

Since completing my BA Studio Art I’ve continued to shoot digitally, focusing on wedding and lifestyle photography. My work has been featured on the Huffington post, Love Inc Magazine and exhibited as part of Contact Photography Festival, Queen West art crawl and Culture days.
With 10 years experience capturing weddings and families,  I love to tell stories that are filled with emotion, silly quirks and full of personality. I put my heart, energy and creative drive into my work. I believe photo sessions are best spent doing something you love in meaningful places, or discovering new ones. As a photographer, I want to capture photographs filled with love, honesty and lasting memories.

Hugh has been shooting weddings full time for 8 years. During this time he has won various different awards including the highly coveted Rangefinder Magazine’s 30 Rising Stars and Junebug’s Best of the Best. Hugh has spoken at wedding photography conferences both in Canada and internationally, and has mentored and taught over 100 other wedding photographers. Hugh has always been a very active member of the wedding photography community. This year he is proud to be one of the judges for the British Columbia Professional Wedding Awards.

Hugh shoots with a fine art documentary approach, focusing on the moments and emotions that make up a wedding day. He believes that there are so many wonderful gestures, looks and smiles that make us who we are. He’s forever aiming to capture this in his images in a thoughtful, creative way. He loves showing the smaller, less significant parts of weddings; proud parents watching their kids, grandparents lovingly hugging their grandchildren. His work is cinematic and monochromatic, using carefully considered compositions and lighting to tell his stories. His distinct style of imagery has developed from a 25 year background in photography and a fascination with art and human connection.

Katia Taylor Photography

My style of wedding photography is a blend of fine art and photojournalism. This allows me to capture genuine and organic moments without being obtrusive. This is how I work to make each image more than just a document, but a piece of art.

I pay close attention to elements of light, colour, composition, and emotion so that I can tell the story of the wedding day creatively and uniquely. While allowing moments to flow naturally, some images are lightly posed to create beautiful portraits. I take cues from my couples as to how much direction they need and how to maximize their comfort level to get photos they’ll love. Above all, I want to make the whole experience fun and memorable. A wedding day is about celebrating your love. The photographs we create on a wedding day can forever bring people back to that moment, that day, and will be shared for generations to come.

To me, photographing weddings is such a privilege. From a young age, I had a knack for photography and was lucky enough to be able to pursue it as a career. I feel so honoured to have a creatively rewarding job that I am passionate about. Every story is so unique. I love to hear about how each couple met and the journey that took them from their first glance to saying ‘I Do’! I get the opportunity to capture the raw emotions, from anticipation and excitement to passion and pure joy. This is what inspires me to create the best images possible.

I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography Studies from Ryerson University in 2001 and began my professional photography company in 2003. With 17 years of experience, I have photographed hundreds of weddings with a focus in the GTA, but have also shot in Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, New York, Jamaica, and the United Kingdom. My work has been published in magazines and blogs including Junebug Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, The Wedding Co., Bride and Tonic, Wedding Bells, and Champagne Sweets.

It’s just as much about the compromises and the in-betweens. Just like love itself, weddings have SO MUCH going on and that’s what I find so compelling about photographing them. There are a wide range of stories and emotions happening all at once.

Six years into photographing weddings and my documentary approach remains the same: I’m at your wedding striving to document it ALLLLL: your drunk aunt Martha dancing like Elaine from Seinfeld, the tears streaming down your grandfather’s face, your friends smoking joints out back, all of the hand squeezes and you and your lover swept with emotion throughout the entire day.

I’ve been shooting weddings around the world of lovers from all walks of life, which has led me to believe that there’s no such thing as one right way of getting married. I’m here to document your day no matter how you celebrate – whether that’s an intimate outdoor wedding, a swanky night in the city or a barefoot Burning-man inspired elopement. I believe in capturing human behaviour, emotions and dynamics more than anything, because preserving moments that are comprised of people you love are what builds your legacy in a substantial and impactful way.

Celebrate in ways that are meaningful to you both and know that I’m here in your corner ready to cheer you on, make your photography experience amazing and your photos friggen magical!

We are absolutely in-love with everything weddings.  The emotion, the laughter, the tears and the joy. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to be around a loving and happy bunch of people celebrating and enjoying one another. When we shoot, we strive to blend in – to become “photo ninjas”. It sounds funny, but we really do want to be forgotten. The less we are noticed, the more we are able to capture those authentic and real candid moments. So how do we do this, you ask? We tell jokes, we laugh, we make our couples and families feel relaxed. Being photographed all day is not the norm for most people, so the more relaxed you feel, the more comfortable you feel, and so, the more you forget that we are holding cameras!

Don’t get us wrong, all of us at Little Blue Lemon Photo & Cinema are comfortable stepping in when needed and have no problem directing if asked. Some couples want posing directions and others want us to capture the essence of their day. We create based on what our couples want and our goal is to capture your wedding day in the way you feel is best. After all, your wedding is about you and we are there to capture it all. Little Blue Lemon is home to some of the best wedding photographers in Toronto. Most of us are local photographers but we service all of Toronto, the GTA, Ontario, Kelowna, BC and Canada! Don’t be shy, get in touch – we’d love to chat!

When I shoot weddings, I like to think that I don’t just photograph a bride or groom – I photograph the feeling and moment in all it’s trueness. This gives an honest approach to each and every wedding in a real and genuine way. If you are looking for a photographer who keeps things comfortable, natural, and fun, you have come to the right place. Every ceremony and reception is another chance to capture authenticity.

Before I ventured out full time into photography I had worked as a media producer for TELUS which is one of the big telco’s in Canada. After some much needed soul searching I had discovered the corporate life wasn’t for me and soon found myself going ahead on this amazing visual journey. Storytelling was where it’s at and that is something I really strive to do with my wedding photography.  I have been around the world shooting everything from monkey’s in ancient asian rainforests to rivers of ice in Iceland.  I like to bring everything I have learned on my travels and experience in commercial photography to my wedding clients so they have not only an experienced technical director but also a friend they can feel comfortable with.

Beatrice is flexible and happy to work with any requirements that a client desires. Whatever their needs may be, she will capture them in a creative manner. Her wedding packages also include a complimentary engagement photo shoot. This way she gets to work with her clients before the big day, which is very important in making them feel comfortable. Beatrice also meets and communicates with her clients to get a clear idea of what their vision is. Moreover, photographic style is key in capturing the big day in the perfect way. Another key feature of Beatrice’s wedding packages it that she does not limit the number of final edited images she gives to her clients. She doesn’t believe in withholding her art from people who appreciate it and have chosen her for the special moments in their life. Additionally, her turn around for images is a shorter time than most other photographers. And at the end of the day, it’s not only the quality of the images that matter, but also the overall experience she provides to her clients. Ultimately, Beatrice is a creative and passionate artist who not only photographs people’s special days and events, but also teaches this craft to others. She chooses to photograph because she loves the art, not because her livelihood depends on it. She is happy to work with new individuals and she always feels honoured when someone invites her to capture the highlights of their lives.

Any description of Plum Rose is also a description of me: Stephanie. I am a Mother, I am a Wife, and I am a fine art wedding and portrait photographer based in the Durham Region. I need the light, the warmth, the softness and delicate highlights; I need beauty to make me happy. When I reflect on where I am at and what I do as my “job”, I always have a newfound appreciation of how incredibly lucky I am to be capturing families’ genuine joy – candid laughter and smiles, new life being welcomed into the world, a bride dancing with her father, the romance and emotion between a bride and groom – all these things serve as a reset: a slight pause in a moment when people are just present to one another and I get a reminder on what it is that truly matters in life.

This is personal to me: you’re going to see my boys and my husband, very likely one of Nigel, Rosie or Sprinkles (yes he is a boy), and you might even catch a curse word if I go Live! You will see me, authentic and vulnerable. I don’t feel like I should expect my clients to feel comfortable if I can’t even let my guard down!

I love my family and I know you do too. My job is to help you convey that in an image that you can hold on to for the rest of your lives. I look forward to meeting you!

  • Raph Nogal

Raph’s work can be best described as a fusion between artistic & dramatic editorial and candid & organic photojournalism. His approach to a wedding day comes from a personal place and it’s all about the experience and how Brides & Grooms feel in front of the camera; sometimes it’s the moments-between-moments and sometimes it’s the badass hero shot on top of a hill. Making sure clients look their best is very important, but never sacrificing organic moments to make sure the authenticity remains true. It’s always a fine balance between those two scenarios that makes the wedding day so spacial.
Raph always loves playing with light. He takes what is commonly done in commercial photography with lighting and applies it to a wedding day on a smaller scale. Light shapes and creates dimension, and expresses moods. No matter if its in the middle of a bright sunny day or nighttime, Raph’s lighting expertise will ensure your wedding images look epic.

Raph is an ambassador for several photo industry companies, including Profoto, MagMod, VisionArt, and several others and an educational ambassador for SLR Lounge. You can catch Raph around the city, country and internationally presenting at photography conferences and trade-shows and conducting workshops teaching other photographers

The complete month-by-month wedding planning timeline

Wedding planning

Wedding budget
Wedding finances

Freshly engaged and still reeling from the thrill of the beautiful proposal? Indulge yourself in the ecstasy of this milestone chapter in your life, for it happens just once.

Have a party, take a holiday; all you need to celebrate! Then, get down to business!

Start your wedding planning process with the following tasks.

Prepare the Wedding Budget

Weddings are expensive affairs, and this is the right time to discuss finances with your fiancé.

Calculate the maximum amount you can afford to spend. Then, divide the funds into different expenses. Some of the important factors to consider at this point are:

  • Who pays for the wedding? Are your families/other generous relatives contributing? If so, how much will they be paying?
  • What are your priorities—venue, décor, entertainment, food, honeymoon?
  • What tools will you use to jot down and track expenses? Do you prefer the pen and paper route, spreadsheets or a budget planning app?

This useful budget planning tool will help you create an estimate and break it down into different aspects.

Plan the guest list

It is never too early to sort out your guest list as the number of guests will determine important aspects like the choice of venue and food. So, you must have at least a rough idea of how many guests will be attending the wedding.

If your parents are contributing, it is only fair that they also get to invite some guests. Compile the lists from your partner, parents and yourself to get a total headcount. If there are more people than you can afford, this is the time to negotiate and arrive at a reasonable number.

To hire a wedding planner or not

Do you think you are better off entrusting your wedding planning or at least certain aspects of it to a wedding planner? If so, this is the right time to find an event planner.

Hiring a wedding planner is expensive. However, it may be the best option if you cannot dedicate time for wedding planning.

So, weigh your options and if you decide to hire someone, do it right away.

Fix the date, plan the theme and book your venue

Good venues get booked fast. So, don’t delay in making your booking.

You can either choose a theme and tour venues that match the vibe or pick the venue first and then think of a suitable theme.

Don’t worry about the specifics at this stage of wedding planning. Instead, focus on finding a venue that will accommodate your guest list and falls within budget.

Wedding decor

You still have plenty of time left. Tackle the following tasks during this month.

Choose your wedding party members

Don’t wait longer to choose your Maid of Honor, bridesmaids, best man, and groomsmen. Then pop the question to them and finalize your wedding party list.

Look for inspiration

You can now start planning the smaller details of your wedding. Turn to Pinterest, magazines and any other sources that can help you with this task. Prioritize the following tasks during this month:

  • Fixing the colors in your wedding theme
  • Narrowing down your décor and food choices

Work on your wedding website

A wedding website is a brilliant resource that will help you compile and share all relevant information about the wedding, with your guests.

You can inform them about the venue address, wedding day timeline, wedding registry information and even photos using such a portal.

Check out this post on A Practical Wedding website for the essential etiquette rules that you should stick to when designing a website.

Plan your entertainment, food, and décor

The following questions will help you with wedding vendor selection:

  • Do you want a band or DJ for the reception? And are there any specific artists you wish to hire?
  • What type of décor would you prefer? More importantly, think of the floral details you want it will soon be time to choose a florist.
  • What type of food should be served at your wedding? Do you prefer a full four-course meal a buffet? Accordingly, find caterers who can deliver to your expectations.
  • What type of photography do you like most? Read up on the different types of wedding photography styles and choose your favorite. Then look for photographers who specialize in your chosen style, contact them for their prices and move on to the next stage.

Start thinking about your wedding dress

Dress shopping is one of the best parts of wedding planning. However, wedding dress orders typically take six to nine months to be delivered. So, you will have to start shopping for your wedding dress shortly. Make the task easy by preparing for it.

Read up on wedding dress trends and familiarize yourself with wedding dress lingo. There is a ton of information online. So, use the resources at your disposal to become familiar with all that you should know about wedding dress shopping.

Also, use this time to shortlist boutiques that carry gowns in the price range you can afford. You can contact them right away and fix your bridal dress appointment in the coming month.

Vendor selection
Wedding Vendor selection

By now, you should have booked or at least finalized the venue, decided on the type of entertainment, food, and décor you want and have a headcount for guests. Let us now move on to the remaining tasks.

Hire the wedding officiant, caterer, photographer, and other important vendors

Your officiant, photographer, DJ/band and caterer are crucial to creating great memories of your special day. So, it is important that you are comfortable and strike a good rapport with your chosen vendors.

Since good vendors tend to get booked quickly, make your choices quickly. Book a tasting session with the caterer if necessary. Similarly, ask for previous performance records from your DJ and band. You can also consider getting engagement photographs taken, to assess how good your photographer is.

Do your research, make your final decision and put down the deposit. You can then cross this task off your wedding list.

Work on your wedding invitation and send out save-the-date cards

Wedding invitations come in a stunning variety of styles. You can also have custom wedding invitations, but these involve a lot of time and effort. Decide on your preferences and start looking for suitable choices.

If your wedding is during peak season or it is a destination wedding, you can send out save-the-date cards right now or in a month, so your guests have enough time to make plans.

Wedding dress shopping
Wedding dress shopping

Your wedding is approaching, and it is now time to start planning the bigger (even game-changing) aspects of your wedding day. Let’s find out what they are

Go shopping for your wedding dress

Start your wedding shopping now and you will have ample time to complete the entire process. Not only should you be able to explore your options in different stores but you can also save on rush fees.

If you place your order at least 6 to 9 months before the wedding, you can conveniently schedule alterations and accessories selection. So, book your appointment and get on with it already.

Visit this post for all that you need to prepare well for the task.

Set up your gift registry

Your guests will begin thinking about gifts as soon as they receive your invitation. So, it will be helpful if your gift registry is set up by then.

To decide what should go on your registry, discuss with your partner about your personal preferences, hobbies and how you expect your lifestyle after marriage to be. Accordingly, plan your wedding registry and register yourself at your chosen retailers.

Also, add your registry information to your wedding website. This is a smart way to pass on the information to your wedding guests.

You are nearing the half-way mark and you should ideally have tackled most of the time-sensitive tasks by now. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of work left to do.

Book rooms for out-of-town guests

Your guests will appreciate it if you can help them plan their stay if they are coming from far. Hotel rooms tend to be full during peak season. So, book your rooms well in advance.

Since your guests will be paying their own bills, it is a good idea to look for hotels in different price ranges. Share the details with them and block the rooms as soon as they confirm.

Contact rental companies

If you must need tables, chairs, music systems, lighting or anything else at the venue, this is the time to take quotes from rental companies and book their services.

Time to look for bridal party outfits

Now that you have placed the order for your own wedding dress, move on to outfits for the rest of your wedding party. Consult your bridesmaids or go with your instincts to choose the color, style, and other details.

Do your research on the places where the dresses are available at reasonable prices. Then book an appointment to explore your options.

Once you shortlist the dresses, you should take your bridesmaids along to see how they look in these dresses. You can then go ahead with placing the order.

Plan your honeymoon

Before you know it, you will too busy to plan your honeymoon. So, plan your honeymoon budget without delay and select a suitable location. Book your accommodation and travel, so that is out of the way.

Book the rehearsal dinner venue

Now is the time to plan the rehearsal dinner. Consult your fiancé to find a convenient venue for the wedding. Also, decide whether you want it to be a casual-style dinner or a formal setting.

Meet your wedding officiant

Some couples prefer to hire a professional officiant to oversee the wedding ceremony. Others keep it casual by asking a family member or friend to do it.

Either way, you should meet with them prior to the wedding and map out the ceremony. Also, check whether all the legal documentation is sorted out.

Arrange transportation

Plan and arrange transportation to and from the venue. Contact cab operators to hire a limo, vintage car or any other form of transportation. This is also the time to look for mini-van rentals, individual cab services or bigger vehicles if you plan to arrange transportation for your guests.

Meet your florist

By now, you should have a good idea of how your wedding décor will be. You should also be aware of the individual bouquets you will need for yourself and the bridesmaids. Share this information with your florist and ensure you are both in agreement regarding the plans.

Time for premarital counseling

If you are getting married in a religious setting and premarital counseling is necessary, schedule it for this month. Even if it isn’t compulsory, attending a pre-marital session is often helpful. So, give it some serious thought.

Create a shopping list and schedule shopping trips for all that you need to buy.

Order your wedding cake

The wedding cake is a very important aspect of the wedding. And you have so many options to choose from these days. Selecting the wedding cake can be a demanding task since you not only have to choose the right flavors but also pick the design for it.

Get recommendations from friends and family and find a professional wedding cake. Remember that you will have to find time for cake-tasting sessions. It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

You will also have to attend a meeting or two with the caterer to discuss your design expectations and sign-off on the chosen design.

Sort out the groomsmen’s outfits

This is also the right time to start looking for groomsmen outfits. If they will be renting their tuxes, they should make the booking now.

Plan the guests’ favors

You want to tie the wedding favors to the theme of the wedding and find those that fit your budget. Explore your options and start negotiating with vendors to find the best choices for your budget. Then place your order.

Some brides prefer DIY wedding favors. If you plan to take this route, remember that it will take time. Dedicate reasonable blocks of time in your calendar to the task, so you don’t end up overworking yourself at the last minute.

You are nearly there. So, let’s pick up the pace.

Finalize the menu

Now that you are so close to the wedding, you can inform your caterer of your final menu choices. You may also like to look at the seasonal ware to decide the best menu options.

Write your vows

If you will be writing your vows, it is high time to start thinking of it. Here is some help to come up with memorable and impactful vows. Once you complete it, you can also practice them. This will help you fine-tune it till it is perfect for when you must say it aloud.

Check on your vendors

By now, you should have everything in place for the wedding. You should have hired entertainment, photographer, caterer, florist, transportation, and cake. Confirm your bookings and make sure that there is no confusion regarding the date and schedule with each of them.

Send out invitations

Mail invitations at least six to eight weeks before the wedding. Also, set the RSVP date a month before the wedding. This will leave you enough time to plan the seating arrangement and also to accommodate for any last-minute changes to the guest list.

Create your schedule for the remaining days

You will have your wedding dress fittings, bachelorette party and meetings with vendors in the coming months. Avoid getting overwhelmed with all the activity by setting up a timeline for yourself where each activity is properly spaced out.

2 months to go

Wedding party

We are counting down now. Few more tasks to go!

Send out rehearsal dinner invites

It is just a few guests at the rehearsal dinner. Nevertheless, you want to get it right as it is a practice for the actual reception. Invite all concerned parties to the event and inform them of how formal it is.

Have your hair and makeup trial

Organize your hair and makeup trial with your chosen hairdresser and make-up artist. It is highly likely that your wedding dress fitting will also be this month if you booked it early. So, plan your hair and makeup sessions in such a way that it coincides with your dress fitting appointment. That way, you can see how the overall look comes together.

Start your wedding dress fittings

You should ideally have your first wedding dress fitting this month and the next one in the coming month. This will leave you plenty of time to get your dress ready in time for the wedding. Confirm your appointment slot and contact the seamstress to schedule your fitting.

Get your papers in order

Six weeks is a good time to apply for your wedding license. If you are getting married abroad, check for legal requirements and ensure the paperwork is taken care of.

Check with your wedding party on their dresses

Your bridesmaids should receive their dresses this month and schedule alterations.

Entrust the task of following up on the progress to your MOH or handle it yourself. Just make sure that nobody is left out and that there are no confusions later.

Finalize your wedding day songs or playlist with your DJ or band

Review the playlist with your DJ or band. If you have any last-minute ideas or changes to make, you can check with them right away.

They should still have enough time to accommodate changes if it isn’t anything major.

Just a month to go

Wedding planning
Wedding planning

In the last few weeks leading up to the wedding, you should be equipped to handle just the final closing details of the wedding tasks. Let us look at what they are.

Plan your seating chart

You should have the complete guest list by the first week of this month. Now that you know who all will be attending, set up the seating chart.

Arrange vendor payments

Whether you will be paying your vendors after the wedding or just before it, make sure that the funds are ready so you can settle the amount as and when necessary. Also, track the expenses to make sure that they are all accounted for and there is no confusion later.

When making payments in cash, entrust the task to a trusted aide who will handle the payment, so you can concentrate on being the bride.

Sort out your accessories

Don’t wait till the day before your wedding to finalize and arrange all your jewelry, accessories and make-up essentials. Put aside a dedicated bag or space in your room where you can neatly arrange them as and when time permits.

This way you will have everything set out when it is finally time to get ready on the wedding day.

Get your emergency wedding day kit ready

Find out all about what your emergency kit should contain in this post. Whether you decide to buy it readymade or collect all the materials yourself, have everything in place at least a week before the wedding.

Attend the final dress fitting and collect your dress

Your wedding dress should be perfect and ready to wear in the week leading up to your wedding. Take your bridesmaid with you to the final fitting, so the consultant can brief her on how to bustle the dress, in case it is required.

Once you collect the dress from the salon, place it in a safe, low-traffic area of your house where it isn’t prone to moisture, insects or stains.

Confirm all arrangements

Cross-check that everything is progressing as per plan with your vendors, wedding party and photographer. Confirm all arrangements and entrust responsibilities to designated wedding party members.

Run the day-of plan with the main crew at your wedding, so they are all aware of when and where to be and what to do.  Also, hand out wedding bands and other items to the responsible members of the wedding party and give them instructions about their responsibilities in this regard.

Pack your honeymoon bag

Since you will most likely be heading off on your honeymoon immediately after the wedding, keep your honeymoon bag ready and packed to go. This should be one of the final tasks to handle, but it is important nonetheless.

Put someone in charge of getting the gown to the cleaners

Your honeymoon cannot wait. However, cleaning your wedding gown cannot wait either.

Assign the task of taking the gown to the cleaners to a trusted bridesmaid, so it doesn’t have to wait till you are back from your honeymoon. Book your cleaning in advance, so the drycleaners have your slot ready. For more details, visit this post.

Make a checklist

It is a good idea to create a checklist for the wedding eve and wedding day and distribute copies to your MOH and best man. Assign relevant tasks to your wedding crew and brief them on their responsibilities.

Make sure that you have very few tasks to handle by yourself, so you can be fully involved in the wedding day activities and enjoy every moment to the fullest.

Break in your shoes and prep for your wedding day

Avoid the discomfort of wearing new shoes by breaking in your shoes during the last few days before the wedding. Also, book yourself a manicure, pedicure and facial to relax, de-stress and look great. This is also the time to touch up your hair color, trim your hair and do all your last-minute beauty prep.

To wrap up…

Follow this schedule when planning your wedding and you will not overlook any aspect. Finally, if things get too hectic or don’t go as per plan, take it easy, sit back and reassess the situation. You will mostly find an alternative solution that works out just as well.

Keep in mind that your wedding day will be over before you know it and it will be a pity if you were too busy to enjoy it.

Complete Guide to Boho wedding ideas – decorations & accessories

boho wedding dress

Planning a wedding can be a nerve-racking and genuinely elated experience. Every bride needs to have everything sorted out and that means literally everything. From the meticulous dress, beautiful hairstyle, extravagant and unique decorations, and immaculate accessories. If you have the desire to implement bohemian flair into your special day, then you are really in for numerous gorgeous options.

Starting from the late 1960s, Boho chic style has most certainly evolved into an even more faddish and extravagant look that every bride can incorporate into her wedding day. Whether you are mixing the various bohemian and hippie influences into your look and decorations, the main focus is to incorporate genuine rustic and vintage items with earthy and natural tones. Woven décor elements, an abundance of light linen drapery, lavishing floral and earthy details is what allures every bride to this style.
It takes patience and careful planning, but every single bride can have her dream wedding with little effort of incorporating these boho wedding ideas. So, without further ado, here is a thorough guide that will get you covered on how to organize a Bohemian wedding.

It takes patience and careful planning, but every single bride can have her dream wedding with little effort of incorporating these boho wedding ideas. So, without further ado, here is a thorough guide that will get you covered on how to organize a Bohemian wedding.

Embrace the natural ambient

Boho weddings are all about blending with the natural surrounding and inviting Mother Nature into your wedding. Having your alter placed in the evergreen wood or simply by decorating the altar with natural green leaves or lush succulents will immediately symbol the greatness of your special day. Seize any natural ambient that you have around the reception, rather than holding the official ceremony indoors.

Lavish yourself with Boho-inspired jewelry

As a bride, you need to look and feel your best. Wearing some specially designated and unique jewelry similar to which you can find at Moon Magic will undoubtedly make you feel ravishing. By wearing some elegant and stylish bohemian jewelry you will be able to express your unique character and make an impact on your big day. Accessories play a vital role in the bride’s complete appearance, so wear the gemstones and materials that suit your personality and which match your Boho wedding dress.

Flower crown and exquisite bouquet

Flowers play a vital part in a bohemian wedding. Before you head out flower shopping, you should consider having a flower crown. Choose wildflowers and irregular pieces for the bohemian flower crown or headband. Opt for similar flower choices for your bouquet. The larger, bulkier and wilder the flowers, the more vivacious the bouquet will look.

Opt for wooden board signs

Embracing everything that nature has installed for usage and make your dream day blushing with colorful indie vibes is what boho décor is all about. Replace all the paper signs with real, rustic wooden board signs for the menu, seat organizers, wedding greetings, and even cocktail bar signs.

Be ‘botanical’ in heart

Never underestimate a wedding dress if it’s not labeled as one. Your bohemian wedding dress needn’t be pure white, on the contrary, you can utilize gorgeous creamy botanical prints into it. Floral elements and lace details go perfectly with this wedding theme. Go for extravagant ball sleeves and off-the-shoulder wedding design for an immaculate combo.

DIY white butterfly and heart-shaped signs

If you wish to plan an outdoor summer wedding, then you can easily make some dreamy and eye-catching DIY decorative elements. Get a regular wooden stick and cut out small hearts on plain white paper and use this to stick into the grass on both sides of your altar. With clear white paper, you can also make 3D butterflies that you can easily attach to the trees all around the venue.

Use natural elements as your backdrop

Taking a picture with guests is a must, and utilizing the natural setting as your picture background is the best way to have marvelous wedding photos. Be creative and incorporate nontraditional elements to the backdrop. Think wood or reclaimed wood, stone, concrete or colorful mirrors. You will also make a unique statement if you place lush greeneries in combination with some purple or blood-red flowers.

Choose a contemporary, but the rustic venue

If you can’t seem to escape from hustle and bustle of the buzzing city and have your bohemian wedding at a peaceful countryside, then try to find a venue that resembles a farmhouse or it’s simply rustic but yet stylish and modern in appearance. Search for the venue that offers a luxurious setting, but warm and welcoming ambient. Redwood chairs and parquet floor, white linen draperies, exquisite chandeliers and maybe breathtaking exposed brick walls.

Rustic wedding centerpieces

There are innumerable ways to add glamor to your bohemian wedding with luscious centerpieces. You can use simple wood log tree slices and place wildflowers in silver milk churn or mini crystal bottles. Placing vivacious, wildflowers in rustic wooden crate box will also make a flabbergasting centerpiece. Place astonishing flowers like peonies, ranunculus, garden roses and scabiosa with multicolored feathers in wooden vases that go hand-in-hand with a bohemian theme.

Lace-up

Small accessory details can truly make the entire wedding and a bride’s outlook mesmerizing. First of all, a lace wedding gown may sound too traditional, but you can simply add a few touchy and gorgeous lace accessories that will make your look stand out. Go for lace sleeves, a nice lace headband, or attach lace strap bows on the chairs as one-of-a-kind decorative details.

Utilize bronze and copper flair

Adding outstanding copper and bronze elements to your boho wedding will surely spark up the entire decoration and wedding outlook. Copper, bronze or brush gold candlesticks are the perfect choices as the table ornaments. Besides candlesticks, you can use copper flower glass holders, or bronze disc wedding table numbers. Use antique golden bowls as candle holders for night extravaganza. Any variation of metallic gold accents will surely add some overall dimension to your bohemian look.

Go for mismatching bridesmaid’s dresses

Even if it is fashionable and stunning to have similar bridesmaid dresses if you are up for some bohemian flair you can choose for something contrasting. There is a guide to choosing bridesmaid dresses, but then again you can give your bridesmaids the one-of-a-king opportunity to choose the material, shape, length, design and even the color of their dresses. You might want to stick to the same color or just go one shade lighter or darker, but variety amongst boho bridesmaids never hurts.

Burlap extravaganza

Love it or hate it, but this specific material is utterly favorable amongst bohemian weddings. You can use burlap for almost anything you desire and make your wedding decoration seem and feel sophisticated, stylish and rustic. Burlap is commonly used as a table cloth, or as a napkin or a wrap up for the knives and forks. However, there are many other variations. You can get burlap ribbons and use it to decorate the entire venue or only the wedding arch or the chairs. Furthermore, you can make colorful flower boutonnieres out of burlap and fresh roses.

Hanging delight

If you are holding your wedding reception and party outdoor either in a tent or under a fairytale-like marquee, then it would be extremely magical to hang wildflowers and ‘naked’ lights or lanterns. This whimsical wonderland will undoubtedly smell just as lovely as it will look. You only need to hang the flowers from the ceiling using a ribbon or a fishing wire, and you will create a true bohemian daydream. If you have more money to spare, you can get yellowish and brownish paper lanterns and hang them to invite an even more alluring bohemian sensation.

Amp up the candlelight

Pure white candles can revamp the entire decor without you pushing much effort to achieve a bombastic effect. Candles of each size and shapes look elegant and attract the eyes of the passer-by. If you are going to get Ikea candles for instance, then just decorate them around with lush green garland or emerald succulents. Placing the candles into marbled holders will be the perfect match for the whole wedding theme.

Play with hues

If you and your future husband don’t see eye to an eye with all the aspects of the wedding organization, you can combine the modern aspects with modern flair and still have a recognizable bohemian wedding. Incorporate fresh florals like wispy jasmine for table centerpieces and have all other décors in pink to timid purple color. Play with hues and have a black and gold wedding cake instead of a pink one, add modern aspects like a bubble machine or use rental decorative pieces instead of making some on your own.

‘Naked’ masterpiece

A must accessory to any wedding is, of course, the wedding cake. One of the most original ways to showcase your bohemian style is though ethereal and whimsical accents. Make your wedding cake a spectacular masterpiece. You can have a simple tiered naked wedding cake with various fresh blooms around, or use brownish marble icing shades to create a galactic look. All in all, you won’t go by putting as many fresh florals as your heart desires.

Vintage ceremony arch

The ceremony is one of the most important and most photographed parts of the entire wedding. This is where your mutual life begins, where you exchange vows and finally become one. Consider having a circular ceremony arch which you would decorate in lush greeneries, or opt for the magnificently flower-covered arch with vivacious lilies and kale flowers. If you desire simple perfection, a stand-alone wooden structure with few boho bird feathers and lace details will do the trick.

Design signature coasters

Organizing and labeling the seating areas and names has never been so chic and fun until now. Rocks, marbles, wood and even glass can become a fabulous signature card coasters. You can make then using rocks from your backyard and top it up with some nice paint, or you can use wooden plates and carve your guests’ names by yourself. Add a whimsical note or quote so that they can bring it home as a cherished wedding gift memory.

Whimsical chair flower drops

Again with the flowers, but a real bohemian wedding is nothing without lush flowers perpetrating each moment of your special day. Another rather nifty and stunning decorative idea is to attach and brighten up otherwise plain and naked chairs with magical florals. In order to showcase your bohemian design, you want those chair decoration to be loose and wild. Don’t let everything be too tight or perfectly aligned.

Be funky and bold

Another crucial wedding accessories are shoes. You can completely show off your bohemian nature by wearing a mini wedding dress or an amazing crochet dress.  Be courageous and show your artistic heart by topping up that style with drop-dead gorgeous shows in red or purple color. If you find some fantastic shoes with floral details don’t be afraid to wear them. Who says that wedding shoes must be white?

Let there be light

If you are having your wedding in a rustic farmhouse, or sensations rustic country house, the setting, and ambient might already fit your needs. But if you are outdoors, hanging lush white linen draperies would enliven this unique style. Revamp the entire look by hanging string lights in various colors. Use terrariums as hanging delights, and add candle lights all around if you can, or get rustic copper lanterns to light up the environment.

Dessert table décor

Elevate the atmosphere and invite nature and forestry into your wedding. If you have a dessert table or cocktail bar stand or cake display, use brilliant green garlands to adorn an all-white bar and tables. Whenever you have plain tables, try to use succulents, sage, or any other green garlands as a large focal point which will undoubtedly provide a dramatic and romantic feel to your bohemian day.

Consider having delicate and charming napkin rings

Creating that ‘Wow!’ effect with your guests lies in the details. One accessory element that you can make on your own are the napkin rings. Use either remarkably adoring burlap clothes to tie a small bow and place a wild rose with white feather detail. For blush pastel feel, consider using agate stone clay in timid blue or baby pink color variation or wooden strings as napkin rings.

A gift of eternity

Last but not least, have some finely detailed gifts for your cherished guest to take home with them as a loving memory of your big day. Make delicious macaroons or honey cookies with icing messages and place them in clear jar which you would enclose with a metallic lid or burlap cloth. You can send your guests off also with a fine assortment of mesmerizing shrubs and flowers encased in marble glass terrariums.

Planing a wedding takes careful organization and impeccable diligence. Boho-style wedding accessories and decorations represent only a glimpse of the whole setting – it is the bride’s and groom’s love, mood and smiles that will lift that bohemian spirit within all the guests.

The definitive guide to bridesmaid dress shopping

bridesmaid dresses

Bridesmaid dress shopping is an indispensable and important aspect of your wedding planning.

bridesmaid dresses

Choosing the right dresses for your wedding party members involves unique challenges such as finding dresses that your bridesmaids approve, that also work with the wedding theme.

So, bridesmaid dress shopping may even end up being more demanding than wedding dress shopping itself! However, with proper preparation and planning, you can tackle bridesmaid dress shopping efficiently.

This comprehensive guide to bridesmaid dress shopping will discuss all that you need for stress-free bridesmaid dress shopping.

So, let’s get started!

Preparation for Bridesmaid dress shopping: Decisions to make

Did you know that the actual shopping process begins much before your bridesmaids set foot in a shop?

Ideally, you should start planning bridesmaid dress shopping at least six months before the wedding.

This will give you enough time to finalize the selection criteria, co-ordinate with your girls and fix shopping appointments and book alterations when the dresses arrive.

So, let us look at the different steps to consider during the preparation stage.

What is the budget?

Being chosen as a bridesmaid comes with many perks. However, at least some of your girls may worry about one aspect—the expenses they must bear.

According to this survey by the Knot, the average bridesmaid dress costs $150. It may be higher or lower based on the bride’s preferences.

Make it easy for your bridesmaids by asking them what they are comfortable spending. Accordingly, fix the budget and restrict choices to dresses in this range.

If the price is a severe constraint, here are some practical ideas to save on bridesmaids dresses.

Who makes the final choice?

Gone are the days when the bride would choose a single dress for all her bridesmaids. Modern brides are fashion-conscious and acknowledge the fact that their bridesmaids would like to be consulted about their preferences.

If you are really flexible, you can even let your bridesmaids pick their dresses themselves. However, there is a challenge!

When you give them free rein, the final look may not be cohesive.

Avoid this issue by specifying two to three guidelines. Choose from color, fabric type, length, neckline style or sleeve style.

The other option is to take the whole group shopping at the same time and ensure that the final decision is yours.

When to go shopping?

Bridesmaid dress shopping should be completed months ahead of the wedding. Play it safe and book the session four to six months in advance.

Talk to your bridesmaids and schedule their appointment in such a way that it is convenient for most of the crew.

For bridesmaids who stay far away, you can even explore the option of buying their dress at a different store that is near their place. This will make the collection and alterations much easier.

Where to buy?

The best place to shop for bridesmaid dresses is at a real store. However, it is important to shop at least a few months before the wedding. Stores require time to place your order with the manufacturer and get it delivered.

When you decide to shop at a real store, you can touch and see samples prior to ordering. Your bridesmaids can also try on the dresses to see how it looks on their bodies. This eliminates confusion regarding the quality of the fabric, dress style and choosing the wrong size.

Nonetheless, there are certain challenges when you decide to take the girls shopping. Let us look at what they are and how to tackle them.

To invite all the bridesmaids or not?

If you will be making the final decision regarding your bridesmaid dresses, you will have to go shopping with them. However, it is a bad idea to take all your bridesmaids with you for the first appointment.

Too many opinions can result in chaos and you may end up more confused than before.

Instead, take someone you trust (like your Maid of Honor or mother) when you first visit the boutique. Share your vision with the shopping consultants.

Also, remember that your bridesmaids will have different body types and complexions. Discuss these factors with the sales team.

With their help, narrow down your choices to a few dresses. Make your choices in such a way that there is something suitable for everyone.

These will be the ones that your bridal crew will finally try on. At the next appointment, include all your bridesmaids and help them make the final decision.

Sizing issues and other challenges

When placing the order, your sales consultant will measure the girls and select the size that is closest to their measurements. Since sizing charts are different from those for regular clothes, their bridesmaid dress size will differ from their regular dress size.

Remember that it will be easier to take in a big dress than add extra inches to one that is too small. Choose accordingly.

In the rare case that a bridesmaid is unable to go shopping and you should order on her behalf, choosing the correct size can be a problem. Ask her to get measured by a professional seamstress to ensure you are given accurate measurements to choose the right size.

Once the dresses arrive, each bridesmaid will need one or two alteration sessions to get the dress to fit correctly. Alterations will typically take one to two weeks.

Factor this into the bridesmaid dress shopping schedule. Be considerate of their schedules when planning their fitting appointments.

Now that we have looked at the different challenges you will face during the preparation stage, let us move on to the more interesting task—the actual dress selection.

Getting down to business: Actual bridesmaid dress selection

Once you have fixed the budget and where and when to shop for your bridesmaid dresses, you are ready to begin the actual selection process.

As we discussed earlier, you have two options: either join the bridal party when they go shopping or let your bridesmaids handle the task themselves.

Irrespective of which option you choose, you must guide your bridesmaids towards suitable dresses by supplying a few specifications. Let us look at the various factors that you should consider in this regard.

Choosing colors and styles: factors to consider

Although it isn’t necessary that all the bridesmaids should wear the same color, it is essential that the dress colors match the color palette of your wedding.

If your central colors are bold and bright, it may not flatter all your bridesmaids. In such a situation, you may like to look at dresses in neutral colors. Not only will this complement your bridal look, but it will also blend with any theme.

The bridesmaid dress choices should also complement the bridal gown in terms of fabric and style. This will ensure that your bridal portraits with the wedding party will look splendid. So, complete your wedding gown shopping to go bridesmaid dress shopping.

When choosing your bridesmaid dress color, remember that flexibility is key to a good-looking wedding party. By being open-minded you can find dresses that flatter all your girls, which also tie with the overall wedding theme. For more insight on how this works, watch this video

With proper planning, you can use different dresses to create a dynamic, but attractive wedding party. Here are some practical mix and match ideas to make this happen.

Same color, different dress styles

Give each of your bridesmaids a distinct look by choosing dresses with different style elements. You can vary the silhouette, neckline details, sleeve length, and even hemline to make this happen.

Then tie together their different styles with color. You can ensure that the color remains the same throughout the group by picking different dresses from the same collection.

The result will be fabulous!

Same dress style, different colors

Most designer bridesmaid dresses are available in a range of colors. So, choose different colors for each of your girls.

With this option, the group will look very lively. The bonus is that you can pick colors that suit each of your bridesmaid’s skin tones.  Since you are varying only the color and the rest of the dress design remains the same, you needn’t worry about cohesiveness.

Variations of the same color

Here’s another variation of the first idea we discussed. In this option, you settle on a single color, say purple. Then have your girls choose dresses in different shades of blue. So, you can have dresses in purple, lavender, plum, and periwinkle. The base color will unify the group while each of the girls enjoys her own unique look.

Prints of a type

Printed dresses are all the rage now. So, if you want to enhance the overall style quotient of your group, consider printed dresses. To unify the group, specify the type of print (You can choose from florals, geometric designs, animal prints, etc.) This is also an excellent way to highlight the theme of the wedding through their choice of outfits.

Using the same texture

By choosing the same fabric, you can again create an elegant mix and match effect. Fabrics like lace, chiffon, net or velvet have their own individuality. Choose different colors or styles while keeping the texture similar and you will have a winning combination.

Another unique challenge when choosing dresses for a bunch of ladies is to ensure that it flatters each one of them. After all, you want all your wedding party members to look their best on your special day.

How to find dresses that flatter different body types

Look at your bridal party and you will see that no two women are alike in terms of body structure.

Nature has blessed each woman with her specific body shape.

Body types are basically divided into four: apple, pear, hourglass and rectangle. Each of these body types has its own favorable aspects and some not-so-desirable ones. And this varies from one type to the other.

Hence, a dress style that flatters a specific body type may not look good on another one.  Since the women in your group will each have different body types, it is unlikely that any random dress style will flatter all of them.

So, you have two options:

  • Mix and match silhouettes, so each woman gets a dress that suits her specific body type.
  • Opt for universally flattering styles that will look good on most of the women.

Let us look at each of these in closer detail.

Mix and match silhouettes

The ideal dress style for any body type will highlight the best assets while distracting from the less desirable ones. The dress would also create a balanced structure that resembles an hourglass.

For an apple body type, the upper torso is more prominent. To balance the lower half, it is necessary to choose dresses that create the illusion of a waistline and more volume to the slender proportions of the lower body.

On the other hand, a pear body type has thicker hips. To balance the shape, it becomes necessary to enhance the upper body with a textured yoke.

So, if you have a pear-shaped and apple-shaped bridesmaid, the same dress silhouette would not suit both.

In such cases, consider mixing up silhouettes to flatter these individual body shapes. Keep two or three factors in the dresses similar for overall cohesiveness.

Universally flattering styles

Sometimes, you may simply not have the time or energy to find dresses that flatter each of your bridesmaids. Otherwise, it could be that you prefer to finish off the task faster by choosing a single dress style for all the bridesmaids.

In such cases, it is best to play it safe with universally flattering dress styles. These dresses will look good on almost all body types and your girls will be less likely to complain.

Let us look at some of these options:

Flutter sleeves

When your bridesmaids are from different age groups, have different body types and are of different heights, choose dresses with flutter sleeves and it will suit everyone.

Not only does this result in a modest look, but it is also elegant and flatters almost any woman.

Midi-length skirt

Midi dresses end between the knee and the calf. The benefit of this length is that it is slimming and elongates your legs.

Keeping it below knee-length makes it ideal for women who aren’t fond of showing much skin. This length will also draw attention to their shoes, making it another attractive factor. You can have the exact hemline altered to hit the best part of the leg for each girl.

Fit and flare silhouettes

This dress style is fitted around the torso and flares out from the waistline. It is a universally flattering dress style that creates the illusion of a slim waistline when there isn’t any. It also highlights the waist area in a good way.

Hence, it is a style that works for both pear and apple-shaped women. Fit and flare dress styles create a curvy figure for a rectangle body type while emphasizing the slender waistline of an hourglass figure. Hence it is a win-win for all body types.

Bridesmaid dress shopping based on season and formality

When choosing bridesmaids dresses, be mindful of the weather conditions at the time of your wedding. Make decisions regarding the dress fabric, hemline and sleeve length based on how cold or warm it will be.

The bridesmaid dress choices should also complement the formality of the event. Opt for casual styles when the wedding has a semi-formal or casual theme. In formal settings, elegant and sophisticated choices look best.

Here are some tips:

  • For warm months, light-weight and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen and chiffon are ideal. You can opt for silk, velvet or wool when the weather is cold.
  • Long gowns are a good choice for autumn and winter. Midi and Mini dress look good in summer.
  • Match the bridesmaid dress style to the formality of the event. Long gowns in bold colors look good at formal weddings while short dresses in cheerful colors and lightweight fabric are suitable for informal settings.
  • Sleeveless and strapless dress styles can make your bridesmaids uncomfortable in cold weather. Either opt for longer sleeves or select accessories like shrugs and stoles to keep them cozy in such conditions.

Other important factors to consider when choosing bridesmaids dresses

While we have already covered the most important aspects of bridesmaid dress selection, there are some more factors to consider. Let us look at what they are.

Are your bridesmaids uncomfortable wearing certain styles?

Certain neckline, sleeve-length or hemline choices may be unsuitable for some of your bridesmaids. And you want your bridesmaids to be comfortable and not too conscious about their dress on the day.

So, it is a good idea to check with them about the dress elements they would rather not have in their dresses.

Are some of your girls uncomfortable in shorter dress styles? Do they find certain necklines (like strapless or a deep-cut V) to be too revealing?

Get their insight on these aspects and make a wise decision that will not inconvenience them.

When there are plus-size or petite bridesmaids

When choosing bridesmaid dresses, you may not always have the same variety of options if you have plus-size or petite bridesmaids.

The good news is that there are specific dress collections for petite and plus-size women and you can choose from them. Nevertheless, you may like to be more flexible with your selection criteria if you would like to keep the look cohesive in such cases.

If you narrow down your choices to very specific details, it may be more difficult to find suitable dresses for bridesmaids who are on either end of the size spectrum.

If a bridesmaid is pregnant

When your bridesmaid is pregnant, you cannot really predict the exact size to order for her bridesmaid dress. If you are ordering the dress five to six months in advance, her measurements can change drastically by the time the dress arrives. So, this is a very tricky situation.

Here are some options you can consider:

  • Choose a dress with an empire waistline which is by and large the most flattering style for a pregnant bridesmaid.
  • Look for maternity bridesmaid dresses that are designed to keep pregnant women comfortable while looking good.
  • Order up to two sizes larger than her current measurements. This should ideally compensate for the increase in bust and hip measurements over time. In case the dress ends up being too large, it can always be taken in.
  • Rather than choosing the same style for all your bridesmaids, you may like to restrict your selection criteria to the same color, but different styles when one or more bridesmaids are pregnant.

For more tips on how to shop for a pregnant bridesmaid, visit this article.

Choosing accessories to complete the look

The dress is always the highlight of the bridesmaid look. However, suitable accessories will further enhance their style quotient. So, here are some guidelines to help.

  • If you have chosen the same dress for all your bridesmaids, let them pick out their own jewelry and accents. This will help their individuality shine and also prevent the “cookie-cutter” look.
  • For dresses that are brightly colored or embellished with details and texture, keep accessories to a minimum and let the dress do the talking.
  • For mismatched bridesmaids, bring the look together with the exact same accessories. This can be shoes, belts or even statement jewelry.
  • Accessories quickly add up. Since they are paying for their dresses, it wouldn’t be nice to ask them to buy expensive accessories as well. Just give them guidelines like color and material and ask them to buy the nearest match within their budget. Or you can consider gifting them their accessories to wear on the day.

The final stage of bridesmaid dress shopping: Alterations and Collection

The final part of bridesmaid dress shopping is collecting the order and getting it altered to fit correctly.

We mentioned earlier that almost all bridesmaid dresses need one or two alterations. Let your bridesmaids know about this.

Bridesmaid dress alterations are ideally done a month before the wedding. This will help to get the best fit even if there any weight fluctuations after the dress was ordered.

Have your bridesmaids fix their appointments with a professional seamstress well in advance. This will ensure that the dresses will be ready on time. Also, remember that professional seamstresses can be very busy during peak wedding season and prom season.

It is a good idea to schedule the fitting appointments at the same time as placing the dress orders. For more valuable inputs on how to prepare for bridesmaid dress alterations, visit this post on the Martha Stewart website.

Step-by-step process to follow to ensure bridesmaid dress shopping is completed on time

We have now looked at all the details about preparing for bridesmaid dress shopping and the dress selection criteria. So, let us move on to the step-by-step process to ensure things are completed as per plan.

  1. Start on time: Begin planning for your bridesmaid dress shopping at least six months before the wedding. This will leave you enough time to narrow down your selection criteria, book the appointment, take your girls’ shopping and plan alterations after the dress arrives.
  2. Put your MOH in charge of scheduling shopping appointments and checking on progress: If your bridesmaids will be handling the shopping and dress selection themselves, you should keep tabs on their progress. Since you will be busy attending to other wedding-planning tasks, you can also entrust this important job to your Maid of Honor.
  3. Keep a tab on whether things are progressing as per plan: Plan a schedule or complete-by date for each of the tasks related to bridesmaid dress shopping. Then, communicate the set deadlines to your team of bridesmaids and check whether things are progressing as per plan.
  4. Plan fittings and alterations: Receiving the bridesmaid dress is only part of the process. Next, you should also stay on top of fittings and alterations to ensure the dress is perfect in time for the wedding. Add this schedule to your calendar and remind your bridesmaids to attend their appointments as per the plan.

To wrap it up…

Bridesmaid dress shopping is as challenging as bridal dress shopping. Nonetheless, you can tackle it efficiently with a planned and organized approach. The three main stages are:

  • Preparing for bridesmaid dress shopping
  • The actual dress selection process
  • Fittings and alterations

We have looked at each of these factors in detail over the course of this guide, and you are now all set for the process. Follow these steps and your bridal party will look fantastic.

The comprehensive guide to understanding body types and how it relates to wedding dress selection

Why is it important to identify your body type before you shop for your wedding dress?

Does the very thought of wedding dress shopping make your nervous?

As exciting as bridal dress shopping is, many brides dread the idea of choosing the wrong dress for their special day. This can be an expensive and often, irreversible mistake.

Now, here’s the good news! You can avoid such a mistake.

Wedding dress shopping isn’t complicated if you understand certain basic concepts about dress selection. And this is what we will explore in detail.

I’ll first describe the exact step-by-step procedure to identify your body type, since this factor has great significance in your wedding dress selection.

Thereafter, I’ll help you identify the best wedding dress choices based on your findings. Keep reading to find out more.

How to identify your body type

One of the first and most important factors to consider when selecting any dress (not just wedding dresses), is identifying your body type.

Yes, this is important, because dressing right is about celebrating your best features and hiding (or diverting attention from) the less desirable ones.

If you search online, you will find tons of articles describing different ways to identify your body type. Most of these work with three measurements: the bust, waist and hips. However, wedding dresses are more fitted than regular garments. So, you will require one more measurement, and that is your shoulders.

When it comes to determining your actual body type, we will be following the Bayou equation , where the shoulder and bust measurements can be used interchangeably. This is because not all women are alike.

So, if you have a particularly big or small bust or broad/narrow shoulders, you may fall into two categories, instead of just one. In such a case, you should ideally explore options that are suitable for both body types and find dresses that suit you best.

Let us get on with the actual measurement procedure.

How to accurately measure yourself to find your body type

You will be taking your measurements standing upright. Here is what you will need for it:

  • An accurate tape measure and notepad for the reading
  • A calculator
  • Comfortable fitting clothes
  • A helping hand (optional)

Although you can do the measurements yourself, the shoulder and bust measurements are usually more accurate when someone else does it for you.

Here is how to carry out each measurement.

Shoulders: It is better to have a friend measure this for you. Your shoulder measurement is the total tape length from one edge of the shoulder all around you to the same point.

Bust: This is the circumference measure across the fullest part of your bust, holding the tape taut but not too tight.

Waist: Locate the narrowest part of your waist. It will usually be just above your belly button. Use a tape measure to go around your body along this point and note it down.

Hips: This measurement should be taken just below the hip bone. Locate this point and find the circumference of this area.

If you aren’t sure of getting the measurements right, here’s a guide on wikiHow that will help you with detailed instructions and illustrations.

Identifying your body type based on your measurements

Now that you have all your measurements, it is time to use your calculator and do the following Math.

  1. Shoulders or bust / hips
  2. Waist / shoulders or bust
  3. Hips / shoulders or bust
  4. Waist / Hips

Once you have these numbers figured out, you can use them to identify your body type from the four different standard types, which are:

  1. Apple or Inverted Triangle
  2. Rectangle or straight body type
  3. Pear or Triangle
  4. Hourglass

These are based on Bradley Bayou’s technique, as outlined in his book, The science of sexy.

You can also find detailed explanations for these calculations, here on the Oprah website.

Now, let us look at how to correlate the numbers you just figured out to the corresponding body type.

Different body types and their characteristic features

To discover your body type, you will need the numbers you just measured as well as those that you previously calculated. They were:

  1. Shoulders
  2. Bust
  3. Waist
  4. Hips

And the ratios of

  1. Shoulders or bust / hips
  2. Waist / shoulders or bust
  3. Hips / shoulders or bust
  4. Waist / Hips

Read on to understand the four different body types and find out which of these you identify with best.

Apple or Inverted Triangle

If you are an inverted triangle, the ratio of (Shoulders or bust / hips) will be greater than or equal to 1.05.

This means that your shoulder or bust measurement will be greater than your hip measurement by 5%.

Defining characteristic: your shoulders or bust will be larger than your hips.

Rectangle or banana

Pay attention to the ratio of (waist / shoulders or bust). If you are a rectangle, this ratio will be greater than or equal to 0.75.

If this is the case, next look at your bust and hip measurements. They should be within 5% of each other. To establish this, take the largest of your three measurements and multiply it by 0.95. Then multiply the remaining two measurements. If the result is greater than that of the (largest measurement x 0.95), you are a rectangle.

Defining characteristic: Your shoulders, hips and bust are similar in size.

Pear or Triangle

If you are a triangle, the ratio of (Hips / Shoulders or bust) will be greater than or equal to 1.05

In other words, your hips will measure at least 5% more than your shoulders or bust.

Defining characteristic: Your hips are broader than your shoulders

Hour glass

There are three factors to satisfy if you are an hourglass

Firstly, the ratio of (waist / hips) should be Less than or equal to 0.75

Next, the ratio of (Waist / Shoulders or bust) is less than 0.75

And finally, your shoulder and hip measurements will not differ by more than 5%.

Defining Characteristic: Your upper and lower halves are well-balanced, with a well-defined waistline.

If you would like to further evaluate these formulae or understand each of these calculations and how they relate to the different body types, visit this article on the Daily Fashion Muse.

So, we have now understood how to identify each of the body types using different measurements and calculations. We also analyzed the defining characteristics of all the four body types.

Let us now look at the desirable features as well as the less favorable aspects of different body types.

Desirable features and less favorable aspects of different body types—what to highlight and hide

Even before you identified your body type with the help of this guide, haven’t you felt that certain dress styles look better on you than others?

This is because each body shape has certain desirable features and some less flattering ones. Different dress styles draw attention to different aspects that work in the favor of certain body types.

So, let us start.

Apple or Inverted triangle.

Best features: Your curves, slim legs and full bust

Less desirable feature: Thick waistline and narrow hips

When choosing a wedding dress, you should focus on creating a curvy look by adding definition to your waistline. Styles that flare out at the hips, concealing its narrow dimensions will balance both halves your body. Also look for designs that add volume and curves to the lower half, thus toning down the dimensions of the top half.

Rectangle or Banana

Best features: Smaller bust

Less desirable features: Lack of curves and undefined waistline

Silhouettes that create the illusion of curves where there aren’t any, are the best choice for this body type. Skirts with added texture or elements like ruffles and bows that add volume will enhance the dimensions of your hips and create a curvy figure.

Pear or Triangle

Best features: Small bust and narrow waistline

Less desirable features: Large hips

Keep details in the hip area simple and tone it down with more texture and added volume in the upper half. Dresses that flare from the waistline will conceal and distract from the hips. They will also highlight your upper torso and small bust.

Hour glass

Best features: Balanced upper and lower halves and well-defined waistline

The hourglass is considered the ideal body type as it is naturally balanced and curvy. Close-fitting dress styles that highlight your natural curves are the best choice for this body type. Nevertheless, the hourglass can carry off any dress style easily and you will have more options to choose from if you are an hourglass than any other body type.

Understanding popular wedding dress silhouettes

By now, you should have successfully identified your body type and you should also be aware of the best and less desirable features of it. So, what is next?

Finding the ideal wedding dress silhouettes for your body type, isn’t it?

Well, not just yet.

Before we go there, I think you ought to understand the different types of wedding dress silhouettes that are currently available. This will help you understand what each one looks like and why some of them are suitable for your body type, while others aren’t.

So, here are the top-most and popular wedding dress silhouettes you should be aware of:

A-line

Look at the dress in this image. Do you see how it resembles the shape of an A, with the skirt that flares out from the waistline? Hence the name A-line!

So, this dress style basically has a bodice that fits closely along the rib cage and then flares out into a smooth A-shape from the waist.

A variation of the A-line, called the modified A-line is also gaining popularity among brides. Here is one such gown.

Notice how it is fitted along the bodice and the waistline, all the way down to the hips. It gently flares into an A-line shape from the hips downwards. The benefit of this style is that it is roomier around the hips. Although the simple A-line silhouette is a classic, the modified A-line dress has an edgier look, and is better suited for a modern touch.

Ballgown

The signature princess style silhouette, this style is characterized by its full and voluminous skirt. The dress style also features a snug-fitting bodice that offsets the thick skirt. Here is a perfect example.

You simply cannot miss the thick and wide skirt that characterizes this silhouette. It is a very feminine style that is dramatic from every angle. Whether it is the fitted bodice, the ample skirt or the statement train, the ball gown is the silhouette that can stir up quite an impact.

Mermaid

If you wish to show off your natural curves, there couldn’t be a better silhouette to choose. The mermaid fits snugly all the way from the bodice to the waist and hips, down to the knees. It then flares out beyond the knees, creating a stunning statement. Look at this dress and you will see what I mean.

Not only is the silhouette sexy, it also oozes confidence and style. Not every bride can carry a mermaid-style dress well. So, if you have the body for it, it is a style you shouldn’t overlook.

Trumpet

This silhouette is often confused with the mermaid. However, there are stark differences.

Firstly, the bodice is straight and not snug-fitting like the mermaid. It is also more forgiving than the mermaid, since this style flares out from above the knees.

Here is a trumpet style dress to demonstrate this difference.

Do you see how the shape closely resembles that of a trumpet? The skirt is also less voluminous compared to the mermaid. Nonetheless, it is a style that allows you to highlight your curves and feminine figure.

Sheath

Just as the name suggests, the sheath is a straight silhouette which falls to full length after skimming the body along its natural curves. The sheath is unusually feminine, like you can see in the following image.

This is because of how it gently hugs the body, without being too close-fitted. This creates the illusion of curves, even when there aren’t any. The silhouette also elongates the body, making it appear taller and slimmer.

Empire

This is a unique silhouette that is defined by its raised waistline. Unlike other wedding dress silhouettes, the waistline in an empire dress is higher than the natural waistline. It appears just under the bust. The following image illustrates how it looks.

If you look carefully, you will see how the bust has a very distinct demarcation, and the skirt flows into layers right beneath it. It gradually flares away from the body, but the difference is that this happens from right under the bodice. The skirt is loosely draped, while the bodice is well-defined. This style camouflages the waistline and hips, and is a very forgiving style that hides the flaws in the lower body.

Dropped waist

Just like the name suggests, this dress silhouette has its waistline lower than the natural waistline. So, the bodice continues all the way down to below the waist, and slowly flares into a skirt that flows to full length. For instance, check out this dress.

This is a popular dropped waist design, where the draped bodice continues all the way down the waistline to near the hips, where it then flares out into a full skirt. The dropped waistline detail is emphasized with the draping pattern of the dress. The style elongates the torso, making you appear slimmer in the upper body and adding more volume to the lower half beyond the hips

That brings us to the end of the most popular wedding dress silhouettes that you will come across. Now, let’s move on to the fun part—identifying the best wedding dress silhouettes for each body type!

Remember that there may be more than one silhouette recommended for each body type.

This gives you a good variety to choose from. It also means, you can have a lot of fun trying dresses of each type during your wedding shopping appointment, till you find your favorite.

Best wedding dress silhouettes for each body type

In the previous chapters, we looked at how to identify the different body types. We also covered the characteristic features of each body type, including ones that are desirable and those that are best camouflaged.

We also analyzed the most popular wedding dress silhouettes available. It is now time to combine all this information together. This will help us to find suitable wedding dress silhouettes for each body type.

Read on to find out what are the recommended dress styles for each body type, and don’t forget to make note of what is right for you.

Apple or inverted Triangle

The ideal wedding dress will help you flaunt your curves, which is your strongest asset. It will also hide your slight hips, and create a curvy look by adding more volume to this area. Here are some suggestions:

Recommended dress silhouettes:

An A-line dress with a thick skirt will look beautiful on you. Aim to find one that nips at the waist and flares out beyond it. This will create the illusion of a slim waistline, and highlight a curvy figure.

Also look at ball gowns. The full skirt of this style makes it best for brides with slender hips and legs.  They achieve the same effect as an A-line gown, with a slim waistline and thick layers in the skirt that create a curvy figure.

Styles to avoid:

The basic idea is to avoid any dress style that draws attention to your slender lower half or thicker waistline. This would mean dresses like the trumpet and mermaid that fit closely all the way down to the hips.

Rectangle or banana

If your body type is straight or rectangle, you will lack a curvy appearance. So, dresses that create the illusion of curves where there aren’t any are the best choices.

Recommended dress silhouettes:

Explore ball gowns, since these create a very feminine look with a nipped waistline and thick skirt. This will also draw attention to your small bust, while balancing out the overall look with a full skirt.

Another dress style that works on straight figures is the sheath. Since the dress loosely drapes along your natural body, it adds the illusion of curves.

Styles to avoid:

Any dress silhouette that lacks a defined waistline will exaggerate your straight figure. So, avoid styles like the fit and flare, mermaid or dropped waist gowns.

Pear or Triangle

Your best asset is your toned and trim upper body. So, dresses that draw attention to this area and distract from your ample hips will look best. Since you have a small bust, you can also consider dresses with textured and embellished bodices.

Recommended dress silhouettes:

Ball gowns flow away from the waistline, thus camouflaging your large hips. So, this is a great choice to consider.

A similar effect can also be achieved with an A-line dress that flares out from the waist, hiding the area below it under layers of fabric.

Styles to avoid:

Avoid any style that accentuates the hip or stomach area, since these are your less desirable traits. This means that the trumpet is a definite no! Also avoid the sheath, since it adds more volume to the lower half.

Hour glass

If you are an hourglass figure, you are fortunate. Yours is the body type that looks amazing in any and every wedding dress silhouette. Nevertheless, flaunt your beautiful natural curves in dresses that draw attention to your figure. Choose wedding dress silhouettes that will highlight your natural figure, and you will look stunning. Here are some suggestions.

Recommended dress silhouettes:

Yours is the perfect body type to flaunt fit and flare dress styles like the mermaid and trumpet. Since these silhouettes course snugly along your natural curves and flare out beyond the hips, it will create a dramatic look.

Styles to avoid:

A well-balanced figure like the hourglass will look good in any dress silhouette. So, there are no specific dress styles to avoid. Even so, it is a shame to hide your curvy and sensual figure under dresses which drown you in layers of fabric. Although you will be able to carry it off, you can do better than choosing an A-line or sheath silhouette.

Wedding dress selection for plus-size and petite brides

Apart from the different body types we discussed earlier, there are two more that we haven’t looked at till now. These are:

Plus-size and petite

This guide would be incomplete unless we discuss wedding dress selection for women who fit this category too. So, let us find out more.

What is plus size and petite?

In the fashion industry, anyone with larger than average proportions is plus-size. So, the typical dress sizes in this case would be 14 or more.

Petite women, on the other hand, have a small stature and are shorter than average. Their characteristic feature is a well-balanced overall figure but height that is less than 5’3”.

Let us look at wedding dress selection for both the plus-size and petite bride in detail.

Defining characteristics of plus-size brides

The fit and proportion of plus-size women differ from that of other women, as their curves are more exaggerated. Most plus-size women are curvy in nature.

Plus-size women also have body types that fit into the five different categories we discussed earlier: triangle, straight, inverted triangle and hourglass. The only difference is that the actual measurements for these women will be larger than the average.

Best wedding dress silhouettes:

The best wedding dress silhouette for your body shape will depend on which body type you resemble closely. Use the guidelines in the previous chapter to determine the best dress silhouettes for your body type.

Nevertheless, a general recommendation is that you choose dresses with good fitting, so it plays up your natural shape.

The empire-style and dresses with a well-defined waistline like the A-line or ball gown look amazing on plus-size brides.

Styles to avoid:

Stay away from loosely draped dress silhouettes like the sheath. These only add extra pounds to your look. Also avoid fabrics that cling and instead opt for structured gowns.

Check out our video below, for more help with dress selection when you are plus-size.

Defining characteristics of petite brides

Petite brides are short, but with a well-balanced figure. However, their height can make it difficult to find many options in wedding dresses, as the typical wedding dress is designed for women of height 5’5” or more.

Best wedding dress silhouettes:

Any wedding dress style that creates the illusion of extra height by raising the waistline is recommended for petite brides. A-line dresses, trumpets and sheaths also work for this body type, since it is well-balanced in both halves.

Styles to avoid:

Petite brides will look even shorter in dresses with dropped waists. So, this is definitely a style you shouldn’t wear. Similarly, elaborate silhouettes like the ball gown can overwhelm the smaller size of a petite bride and is best avoided.

Do check the following eHow video for more tips on selecting your wedding dress, when you are a petite bride.

The definitive step-by-step guide to preparing for your wedding dress shopping

Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting wedding planning tasks for a bride. We like to think of it as a wonderful and unique journey where brides explore diverse options and finally find a magical dress that transforms them into the beautiful brides they always wanted to be.

However, the path to finding this one and the only perfect wedding dress is not simple. It is fraught with challenges and the options are endless. So, it is essential to plan for the task and avoid drowning in the endless variety of dresses presented to you.

This is where we will help you!

This step-by-step guide will prepare you for your impending wedding dress shopping and the task will not overwhelm you.

Over the next chapters, we will tell you what to expect at each stage leading to wedding dress shopping. We will also tell you how to navigate potential issues so you can enjoy the shopping experience, just like you deserve to.

Let us begin!

Step 1: Factors to consider when shopping for your wedding dress

Are you unsure of how to begin planning for wedding dress shopping?

Don’t worry, for we know exactly what will help you set your shopping criteria. These are practical factors or constraints, that directly affect your dress decision. Start by considering these factors and you will be able to narrow down your search. So, here they are!

Venue and theme

Have you decided on a wedding theme yet? Your chosen theme will determine your venue choice and directly impact your wedding dress selection. We’ll tell you how.

Imagine you have your heart set on a beach wedding in summer. Would it be practical to wear a heavy satin gown with an elaborate train to this venue?

No!

Such a wedding dress will look inappropriate and it will also be uncomfortable.

Instead, you will have to limit your choices to dresses made from light fabrics in simple silhouettes that are comfortable for the venue and weather. Such dress choices will also tie your look to the theme of your wedding.

Budget

Wedding dresses are expensive. Nevertheless, there are options for every budget.

If budget is a constraint, you will have to stick to affordable choices. So, this is another factor to plan before you go shopping. The latest designer wedding dresses will be super-costly, while ones from previous seasons are usually cheaper in comparison. Keep this in mind when you go shopping.

Body shape and personal preferences

It does not matter how expensive or amazing a wedding dress is. It will not look good on you unless the silhouette flatters your body shape.

So, you should look for dress styles that flatter your assets and distract from less attractive parts.

If you are either plus-size or petite, you may have to tailor your wedding dress search to suit your specific requirements. Not all bridal salons stock dresses suitable for plus-sized or petite brides. So, call ahead to check whether options are available and you won’t waste time at places that don’t stock collections in your size.

It is also important to choose a style that feels comfortable since you will be spending several hours in your wedding dress. Steer clear of dresses that make you feel conscious, restrict movement, or are too bulky to handle.

So, you are now aware of the different factors to consider before you step into a wedding shop.

Next, let us look at another key step of preparing for your wedding dress shopping—choosing the right time to shop.

Step 2: Choose the right time to go shopping

Is there such a thing as the right timing when shopping for your wedding dress?

Yes! And this is very important when making your shopping plans. We’ll tell you why.

When you place your order with a bridal salon, they pass your details to the designer. The designer then starts creating your wedding dress from scratch. Since wedding dresses are elaborate garments, the entire creation process takes months.

Once the dress is ready, it will be sent to the bridal store. However, it is not yet time to take the dress home.

You now need dress alterations to make it fit perfectly. This can take another month or so.

So, the entire process from when you place your order to taking the fitted gown home can take anywhere between six and nine months. So, this is how early you should finish your wedding dress shopping once you fix your wedding date.

If you shop too late, you jeopardize your chances of getting the gown you love. Although some designers undertake rush orders, they charge extra for it. And imagine the disappointment if the gown you love cannot be created at short notice and you must settle for something else.

Shopping too early isn’t wise either. New collections come out every six months. So, if you shop too early, you may miss looking at the latest trends.

Play it safe and plan your wedding dress shopping six to nine months before the wedding. This should leave you enough time to sort out everything and take your dress home in the weeks leading up to your wedding.

Step 3: Plan the wedding dress budget

Your wedding dress is one of the costliest items in your wedding budget. Be clear about what you can afford to spend on it before you go shopping and you can avoid upsetting the rest of your wedding plans.

To come up with a realistic wedding dress budget, you should first understand wedding dress pricing and associated charges. Let us look at what they are in the following section.

Understand wedding dress costs

Most brides spend between $400 and $1700 on their wedding dress.  However, there are dresses that are more expensive or cheaper.

In any case, you should have realized that wedding dresses cost more than regular dresses. Wondering why this is so? Here are the obvious reasons.

  • Wedding dresses use expensive fabric. Most silhouettes also have several layers of fabric. This larger quantity of high-quality fabric contributes to the price.
  • Wedding dresses involve intricate details like embroidery, lace appliques, and beading. Most of these details are done by hand. The labor and time involved in creating such stunning gowns add to the price.
  • Wedding dress construction is different from that of regular dresses. Internal boning is used in many designs and the structure has several layers of fabric. This involves more effort and hence a higher cost.
  • Finally, wedding dresses by famous designers are more expensive due to the designer tag accompanying it.

These factors justify the higher costs of wedding dresses. More details on why wedding dresses are so expensive are available here, on the Southern living blog page.

One important thing that you should know when buying a wedding dress is that your expenses aren’t limited to just the cost. There are some unavoidable additional charges that you will incur, and here they are.

Unavoidable additional costs—accessories and alterations

Apart from the price of the wedding dress, expect to spend some money on the following.

Alterations and fittings: When you order a dress, you pick a size that is closest to your actual measurements. This means that once your dress arrives you will need custom alterations to have the dress fit to your exact measurements. These alterations are additional expenses. The actual cost will depend on the extent of the changes needed. More information on wedding dress alterations are available in the following video.

Accessories: Your bridal look is incomplete without the right accessories. This includes your wedding jewelry, shoes, veil, head-piece, and undergarments. You will have to set aside a part of your wedding dress budget for this purchase as well.

Here is a video that outlines how to accessorize your wedding dress.

For more tips on choosing your wedding day jewelry, take a look at this video we created for the purpose.

Dry cleaning and preservation: Whether you decide to keep your gown after your wedding or sell it off, you must have it professionally cleaned after your wedding. Otherwise, the quality of your gown will deteriorate over time and it won’t be suitable to hand down or sell. So, factor in this cost as well.

Now you should have a better idea of how to calculate your wedding dress budget and all the factors to consider.

What if you are on a tight budget?

Although wedding dresses are expensive, there are still ways to save money on your wedding gown. Read on to find what your options are.

When your wedding dress budget is small

How nice would it be if you could shop without limitations for the wedding dress of your dreams!

Unfortunately, this is impossible!

When the price is a constraint, there are some ways to maximize your wedding dress budget and find a fabulous dress for a bargain price.

  • Limit your dress selection to dresses that fall within budget. Resist the temptation to try on dresses that you cannot afford to avoid disappointment.
  • Remember that the more details a dress has, the costlier it will be. Choose from simple styles for better prices and dress it up with statement accessories to complete the effect. Low-cost accessories like beaded belts, vintage veils, sparkling jewelry, and shrugs can enhance your overall bridal look.
  • Look out for sales at bridal boutiques, where you can find great deals on wedding dresses. During sample sales, boutiques sell their stock at discounted prices to make space for new collections. You can score fabulous gowns at bargain prices at such sales.
  • Mix and match bridal separates to create your unique look at an affordable price. This not only lets you stay within budget but is a modern and smart approach to wedding dress shopping.

The wedding dress budget is a critical factor concerning wedding dress shopping. Once you figure it out, it is time for the next step which is researching your options.

Step 4: Do your research

A little planning goes a long way, and we want to make sure you are well-equipped with all the information you need to make the right choice. So, we will tell you all the different things you should analyze, understand, and note down before you set foot in a bridal store.

Understand essential wedding shopping lingo

When you attend your wedding shopping appointment, you will hear terms like mermaid, fit and flare, empire, butterfly sleeves, illusion necklines, organza, tulle and more. Do you know what these terms mean?

If not, spend some time trying to understand wedding dress lingo, so you aren’t lost and confused at your wedding shopping appointment. Here is an easy glossary of wedding dress jargon for the uninitiated.

Wedding dress necklines:

Apart from the silhouette, the neckline is another distinctive feature of any wedding dress. Apart from the square, round, and V-necklines, here are the other types of necklines seen on wedding dresses.

Strapless: Bodice cuts straight across the bust and there are no supporting straps or sleeves

Sweetheart: Strapless style where the top part of the bodice resembles a heart.

Bateau: Designed in the shape of a boat and reveals collarbones, as it extends from one shoulder to the other

Illusion: Sheer or see-through neckline over the underlying bodice. Often embellished with lace or bead accents.

Single shoulder: Features a single shoulder strap and reveals another shoulder

Queen Anne: Neckline rises at the back of the neck and it has a V-neckline or scoop in the front

Halter: Straps wrap around the neck revealing a low-cut back and deep armhole

High neck: Neckline sits above the collar bones

Off-the-shoulder: Sleeves fall off shoulders to reveal décolletage and collar bones

Spaghetti straps: Thin straps support the bodice on either side

Silhouettes

Here are the most common wedding dress silhouettes.

Ballgown: Structured bodice and ample skirt with layers of fabric that fall to full length.

A-line: Fitted on top and flares away from the body at the waistline, resembling the shape of an A.

Sheath: Column-style dress that outlines the natural curves

Trumpet: Fits snugly along the bodice all the way down to the hips, from where it flares out into a full skirt. Also known as the trumpet

Mermaid: Silhouette structure similar to the trumpet, but skirt begins below the knee creating a more dramatic effect

Sleeves

The terms full sleeves, half sleeves, and three-fourth length sleeves are self-explanatory. Apart from these, there are other types of sleeve styles as follows.

Cap sleeves: Barely cover the shoulders and top of the arms, revealing the armhole

Bell: Fitted sleeves that taper into a bell-shape as it reaches the wrists

Juliet: Fitted at the wrist and puffed in the area between the shoulders and wrist

Waistlines

Basque: V-shaped defined waistline

Empire: High waist that begins just below the bust and continues into a full skirt

Dropped Waist: Bodice extends to beyond the actual waistline

Wedding dress trains

The length of fabric that extends beyond the wedding dress contributes to the overall impact and adds to the attractiveness of a dress. Based on length, the following types of trains exist.

Sweep: Short train that just brushes the floor as you walk

Court: This train extends to a foot beyond the hemline

Chapel: Longer than the court train and usually measures three to four feet long from the natural waistline

Cathedral: Dramatic train that measures over six feet from the waistline

Royal: The long train that flows to twelve feet or more length.

Wedding dress fabrics

Fabrics like chiffon and crepe are lightweight and soft. Satin and silk are also soft but have a distinguishing sheen. Taffeta is heavy with a lustrous sheen. Organza and tulle are stiff fabrics used in structured gowns. A variety of lace also appears on wedding dresses. Find out how to identify each type of wedding dress lace in our article here.

Although we have covered most of the terms you will come across when you go shopping for your wedding dress, this list isn’t exhaustive. If you would like to learn more about these terms and in greater detail, here is an article on the Brides website to help you.

Now let us move on to the next important part of your research—identifying your body type and suitable wedding dress silhouettes.

Identify your body type and shortlist best dress silhouettes

We already mentioned that not all gowns look good on all body. To improve your chances of finding a dress that is right for you, you should first identify your body type.

There are four body types: Triangle or Pear, Inverted Triangle or Apple, Hourglass, and straight or Rectangle. Each body type has its own characteristic features.

Triangle or Pear: Small bust but wide hips and waistline that lacks definition.

Inverted Triangle or Apple: Broad shoulders and a slighter lower half.

Hourglass: Well-balanced upper and lower halves and defined waistline.

Straight or rectangle: Similar proportions in the upper and lower halves and waistline not well-defined.

The right wedding dress will flatter the positive aspects and hide the less attractive traits of your body. So, find your body type and later use this information to choose the right dress silhouette for it.

This post on Who What Wear will help you use your different measurements and correctly identify your body type.  Check it out!

Here are some practical silhouette suggestions for each body type.

Triangle or Pear: Hide the larger proportions of your hips and waistline with A-line gowns and ball gowns that flare out at the waist. Avoid the trumpet and sheath, since these styles accentuate the hip and stomach area.

Inverted Triangle or Apple: A-line dresses and ball gowns with thick skirts that nip at the waistline are suitable for this body type. We do not recommend the trumpet and for this body type.

Hourglass: If you have an hourglass figure, you can carry almost any wedding dress silhouette with ease. Aim to show off your curvy figure and slender waistline with dresses that closely follow your natural curves.

Straight or rectangle: Increase your feminine appeal with ball gowns and sheaths that create the illusion of curves. Avoid fitted styles like the mermaid and dropped waist dresses that enhance the straight contours of your body.

Find the right place to buy your wedding dress

Remember what I told you in the beginning about factors that affect your wedding dress selection?

Based on your personal preferences, specific needs, and budget constraints, decide where to shop. The following are the options available to you.

Bridal salons: The traditional place to buy a wedding dress, you can enjoy a one-on-one session with a dedicated consultant who will take you through your choices during your appointment slot. Bridal salons have a variety of designer collections, and you can try dresses based on the ideas you communicate with your consultant.

Trunk sales: The perfect option if you want dresses only from a particular designer. New collections are introduced to such customers at highly reduced prices, so you can choose a dress at a lower price than you have to pay otherwise.

Sample Sales: This is when bridal salons sell off old stock to make space for new collections. The dresses, in this case, are either floor samples or those in the store inventory. So, there will be limited sizes and you may have to clean the gown before using it on your wedding day.

Consignment shops: This is the perfect place to find designer dresses at a discount. Good consignment stores will have dresses that are good-as-new, available at a fraction of the cost of a similar original gown.

Online: Consider this option if you have no way to shop at a real store. Online wedding dress shopping is risky and many brides have terrible experiences when choosing this route. This post sheds some light on why online wedding dress shopping isn’t a wise idea.

Compile all information and shortlist your options

A quick question—What do you think was the idea behind all this wedding dress research?

It was to collect all relevant information and use it to narrow down choices to the right selection criteria.

As you do your research and understand about wedding dresses, collect and compile information on dress styles and features that appeal to you. Start a Pinterest board and start collecting pictures of dresses you like.

Don’t worry if you seem to fall in love with all the dresses you come across when you first begin. To narrow down your options, ask yourself the following questions

  • What features of this dress are suitable for my wedding theme?
  • What makes it suitable for the weather at the time of my wedding?
  • Why is this dress a comfortable choice for my wedding?
  • What is the stand-out feature of this dress that is most appealing?
  • Will this dress flatter my natural figure and best features?

Soon enough, you will see a pattern emerge and this will help you identify what dress features appeal most to you. This information will be of valuable help when you go shopping.

Step 5: Get ready for your shopping session

By this stage, you have all the information you need and are ready to go shopping. So, here is what is left to do.

Choose your entourage

Your wedding dress is the most important dress you will ever choose, and you must make this decision wisely. So, invite two or three of your closest family members or friends to help you. The reason we tell you to limit the size of your party is that too many people will do more damage than good. Take along only those whose opinions really matter to you, and who can actually contribute to your decision

Book your appointment

Find a convenient time and date for your shopping appointment at the boutique you choose. Preferably have your appointment on a weekday when the salon will be less crowded.

Get everything you need for your appointment ready

Make sure that you are prepared for dress shopping by carrying all that you need for the day with you. Wear clothes that are easy to change out of. If you will be wearing heels on your wedding day, carry a pair to your shopping appointment. For more tips, visit this post.

Understand what to expect at your bridal appointment

Every bridal dress shopping appointment is different. The better prepared you are for what to expect, the more likely you are to have a productive and pleasant shopping experience. We suggest that you read the information here, to obtain a fair idea and prepare well for your shopping trip.

Demystifying wedding dress silhouettes—All you wanted to know about different wedding dress styles

If we say that finding the perfect wedding dress is as challenging as finding the perfect groom, will you agree?

The wedding fashion scene presents an overwhelming variety of options in wedding dress. This, of course adds to the excitement of dress shopping; however, wait till you set foot in a bridal shop, and all this variety will only add to your confusion.

Nevertheless, you must find a way out and reach your goal—a “dream wedding dress” perfect for the most special day in your life! And for this you must know what your options are and direct your attention to choices most suitable for you.

Clever brides know that the wedding dress search begins with choosing the right wedding dress silhouette.

So, join us as we explore this first step in detail. In the coming sections, we will look at different wedding dress silhouettes and identify which of these is best for you based on your body shape.

Let us begin!

Chapter 1: Wedding dress silhouettes—how are they different from regular clothing?

Wedding dresses are very different from regular clothes in the following ways

  • They are complex garments that have internal boning and other special elements like corsets and heavily layered fabric. These features hold the gown up by creating its structure and shape and allow it to drape perfectly. You will rarely see these features in regular clothes.
  • Most wedding dress silhouettes involve intricate and elaborate details like embroidery and lace appliques. This type of fine work is often hand-embroidered.
  • The fabric used in designer wedding dresses is of high-quality, expensive and made of the finest fabrics.
  • Look closely at any designer wedding dress. You can see the impressive quality of work at each level. Everything from how the seams are made to the definition of details will be impeccable.

This video will help you better understand the extent of work that goes into the construction of a wedding gown.

See how much effort it involves?

So, wedding dresses are very different from any other garments!

Now, let us move on to the key factor that differentiates different wedding dress styles—the Silhouette!

By silhouette, what we mean is the shape that your body has when you wear the dress. Wedding dress designers follow certain basic structures when designing wedding dresses. Although there is a stunning variety in style aspects like neckline, sleeves, fabric and length, there are only a handful of wedding dress silhouettes.

Recognize the wedding dress silhouettes that flatter your body type best and your search for the perfect dress becomes much easier. We will tell you why in the coming section.

Chapter 2: Importance of wedding dress silhouettes in your search

We already told you that the silhouette is a defining factor of a wedding dress, which is basically the shape that your body achieves when you wear a certain gown.

Since there are just few wedding dress silhouettes, you can use this as the starting point for your wedding dress search. Identify the dress silhouettes that suit your body type and appeal to your taste and it will be easy to narrow down the rest of your search criteria.

Let us look at this with an example.

Say, you decide to go with the ball gown silhouette. So, this is your first search criterion.

When you convey this information to your bridal consultant, she will only bring you ball gowns to try on. This eliminates the need to explore other silhouettes. Such a focused search will save you time and effort.

Except for the highly unlikely situation that you do not find a single ball gown that you like, you need not even pay attention to any other dress style.

Chapter 3: Types of wedding dress silhouettes

Let us now move on to decoding each wedding dress silhouette in detail. For this, we will discuss the defining characteristics of different silhouettes as well as the pros and cons of each style.

The first one on the list is the ball gown.

Ball Gowns

Think fairytale, and the ball gown is the first style that pops into mind!

The ball gown is a silhouette that says ‘bride’ so very clearly. Synonymous with the princess look, it is opulent and dramatic.

Ball gowns always feature a fitted bodice, defined waistline and full skirt. The contrast between the top and bottom halves of the dress is what makes this silhouette very dramatic.

These dressy gowns are created in fabrics like silk, taffeta and tulle and the skirt is structured to hold a fancy, bouffant style. Ball gowns feature different necklines and sleeve styles, as the ballooning skirt can hold its own against any elaborate or simple bodice.

If you want a dramatic and striking look without much effort, the ball gown is the perfect choice. You will have no dearth of options as there are ball gowns with tiered skirts, ruffle details and stunning embellishments in the hemline or scattered in the skirt. This style looks good on most body types, and hence is a safe choice.

Modern versions feature illusion bodices, striking back details and crisp lines that add flair to this classic silhouette. When fashioned in shantung or dupioni silk, the look is polished and sophisticated.

This dress style works just great for weddings in the cooler months, since it offers ample coverage and keeps you cozy under layers of fabric. When your silhouette is as dramatic as a ball gown, you need few other accessories to complete your wedding day look.

Who should avoid ball gowns?

Ball gowns are not the best choice for brides who are petite or curvy. Petite body structures tend to be swallowed by the elaborate layers in a ball gown. Similarly, curvy brides will look fuller when they opt for this silhouette.

Still unsure? Visit this post for more reasons on why the ball gown is an amazing choice.

Here are some sample ball gown styles from our collection to inspire you.

For a quick and easy understanding of the ball gown shape in wedding dresses, we suggest you view this video.

A-line and modified A-line

The very name of this wedding dress silhouette is self-explanatory, isn’t it?

The easiest way to identify an A-line dress is to check whether it resembles the shape of a letter A. A-line gowns have a fitted bodice and waistline and open into a full skirt beyond the waist. This makes the silhouette look like the letter A.

This style is classic and elegant and is suitable for both formal and casual wedding themes. The A-line skirt is also very versatile, and works well with any neckline and sleeve style.

Now, there is a variation of the A-line that is very popular. It is the modified A-line, which is very similar to the classic A-line, except that the dress has a fitted bodice and waistline that continues down to the hips. It flares into a full skirt only beyond the hips, thus defining the natural curves of the body better than a regular A-line wedding dress silhouette.

The modified A-line is the perfect balance between the classic A-line and mermaid. It defines the shape better than an A-line, but allows easier movement than the mermaid.

A-line silhouettes are universally flattering choices, that look good on most body types. Hence it is a very popular choice among brides. Here is a video that explains the shape and structure of the A-line silhouette in detail.

Here are some of the diverse choices in A-line wedding dresses from our collection at Best for Bride.

 Trumpet

The trumpet is a wedding dress silhouette with a straight bodice that continues down the waistline and hips. The skirt begins at mid-thigh and opens out into a flared shape that resembles a trumpet. The flared skirt is easy to move around in.

The straight shape of the top-half draws attention to the stomach and hip area. Hence it is a good choice for women with slender waistlines and delicate figures. Brides with a curvy figure can accentuate their curves with a trumpet silhouette.

However, if you have a full figure, we believe this may not be the ideal choice since it further enhances your natural curves and draws attention to less desirable areas of your body.

You can find trumpet dresses with all types of necklines, sleeves and interesting features. Watch all that we just discussed in the video below.

Here are some trumpet dress silhouettes from our collection.

Mermaid

Do you want a sexy, stylish and stunning wedding dress silhouette?

Then, the mermaid is the best choice to consider. It has a fitted bodice that closely fits the natural curves of the body all the way down the waistline and hips. The silhouette flares out into a dramatic and full skirt below the knees, creating a stunning effect.

The fitted style of the mermaid makes it suitable for curvy brides who like to show off their natural shape. It is not the best choice for brides with bulky waistlines and hips, since the shape highlights these areas.

Don’t worry if you find yourself confused between the mermaid and fit and flare. Both wedding dress silhouettes have similar shapes and it isn’t always easy to distinguish between them. However, there are differences. So, look for the following.

  • The bodice in the fit and flare gown is straight while the mermaid features a fitted bodice that closely curves along the natural body shape.
  • The skirt in the trumpet silhouette usually starts at mid-thigh while the mermaid skirt flares out further below, at knee level.

Here are some mermaid dresses

Fit and Flare

Like the mermaid and trumpet, the fit and flare silhouette also has a fitted bodice and a full skirt. However, the difference here is that the skirt flares out gradually, beginning at the waistline. In the case of the trumpet and mermaid, the flaring of the skirt occurs much below, at thigh or knee level.

The fact that the fit and flare silhouette has a skirt that gradually flares out makes it comfortable to move around in. Hence it is convenient to dance, walk around or climb stairs in it.

The fit and flare dress looks good on brides with slender waistlines. Since it draws attention to the waistline and bust, it can also be worn by brides who wish to distract from their hips and legs.

Here is a video to demonstrate the difference between the fit and flare, mermaid and trumpet silhouettes.

Let us now look at some examples of fit and flare dresses.

Sheath

This is one of our favorite wedding dress silhouettes, as it is simple, classy and elegant. The sheath silhouette follows your natural body shape from top to toe. It doesn’t have any defined lines and simply flows over your natural body curves.

The sheath is very simple with a straight structure. It does not have multiple layers like other dress styles. Nevertheless, the simplicity of this dress style is its strongest feature.

Sheaths are also known as column-dresses. They look great on straight figures, as they create the illusion of curves. Sheaths are also good for brides with defined waistlines and brides who wish to flaunt their curves.

For more information on this wedding dress style, watch this eHow video.

Chapter 4: Wedding dresses and different body types

We just looked at the different wedding dress silhouettes that are available for brides.

So, when you go wedding dress shopping, do you try dresses in all available silhouettes?

That certainly wouldn’t be a sensible idea!

Unless you limit your options, your wedding dress search will never end. And for this, you should first identify your body type and then find the best wedding dress silhouettes for it.

So, let us first look at how to evaluate what body type you are.

How to identify your body type

Where body shape is concerned, there are four categories:

  • Apple or inverted triangle
  • Pear or triangle
  • Hourglass
  • Rectangle Straight

To recognize which of these you belong to, first measure yourself around the bust, shoulders, waist and hips. Then compare each of these measurements against each other to find out which body type you are according to the following instructions.

  • If your shoulder measurement is much greater than your hip measurement, you are an Apple.
  • When your hip measures more than your shoulder and bust, you are a pear or triangle.
  • If your shoulders and hips measure pretty much the same, and your waist measures smaller than both these measurements, you are an Hourglass.
  • When the measurements of your shoulders, hips and bust are similar, you are a Rectangle.

This comparative method should give you a fair idea of what your body shape is. However, you can also follow the more detailed process in our guide to correctly identifying your body type to analyze your body shape.

Alternately, refer to this post for detailed instructions on how to correctly identify your body type.

Once you recognize your body shape, most of your work is done! It is now easy to find the wedding dress silhouette that best enhances your positive assets.

So, let us move to this step.

In the coming section we will look at the different silhouettes that are best suited for each body type.

Chapter 5: Best wedding dress silhouettes for each body type

Now, let us look at the different wedding dress silhouettes for each body type and understand why it is suitable. We will also look at the dress styles you to avoid for each body type. Here goes!

  • Apple or inverted triangle

If you are an apple, your upper body dimensions are larger than those of your lower body. So, you have broad shoulders and less curves in your lower half.

Based on these characteristics, the ideal dress silhouettes are those that balance out your broad upper body by adding bulk to the lower body.

Dresses that flare away from the waistline, thereby concealing slight hips will achieve this effect. Also, silhouettes that pull the upper half in and define your waistline better will flatter you.

Here are the recommended choices:

A-line: Hide your slender hips and legs under an A-line skirt that flares out at the waistline. The larger the skirt, the better it will balance out your upper body.

Ball gown: These dresses have heavy skirts that can camouflage a slender lower body. The thick skirt also creates a defined waistline that adds the illusion of curves, thus enhancing your figure.

Avoid fit and flare and trumpet dresses since these emphasize the larger proportions of your upper half.

  • Pear or triangle

Pear-shaped women have larger dimensions in the lower body than in the upper half. So, your hips are wider than your shoulders, and you are small on top.

The best wedding dress silhouettes for you will show off how little you are on top, while hiding the larger proportions of your hips. These would be dresses that either hide the hips or flare away from the waistline, camouflaging their larger proportions.

We recommend the following

Ball gown: The full skirt of these dresses and defined waistline will draw attention to your slim natural waist. Your thicker hips will not be obvious under the naturally puffy skirt of a ball gown.

A-line: A-line dresses with skirts that do not cling are good for pear-shaped women. These balance the proportions in either half by flaring away from the waistline and hiding the natural shape of the body beyond the waistline.

Sheaths and trumpets are two silhouettes to avoid. The sheath emphasizes your natural curves and draws attention to your lower body. Trumpets draw attention to the stomach and hip area with their straight lines, and this will not work in your favor.

  • Hourglass

The characteristic feature of an hourglass shape is well-balanced upper and lower halves and a defined waistline. So, your hips and shoulders will be quite the same size and you will have a beautiful curvy structure.

The balanced proportions of both your body halves makes it easy to carry off any wedding dress silhouette. Since there are usually no features to hide, you should show off your curves to look more fashionable. Here are the silhouettes that achieve this effect.

Mermaid: This wedding dress silhouette shows off your natural curves and hence is one of the best choices for hourglass figures. You will look stunning in the well-defined curvy shape that draws attention to your slim waistline.

Fit and flare: You can carry off fit and flare gowns with details like a dropped waist, ruffles and textured bodice with perfect style. This silhouette also accentuates your naturally curvy figure, showing off your best assets.

Sheath: The straight shape of the sheath plays up your natural features, making it a wonderful choice for hourglass figures.

  • Straight

With similar proportions in both the top and bottom halves, your waistline isn’t obvious when you have a straight shape.

When choosing wedding dress silhouettes, look for dresses that create the illusion of curves where there aren’t any. Also look for dresses with bodices that pull in the upper half and create a more defined waistline.

Here are the best choices

Ball gown: This dress has a slender bodice and a full skirt, that creates a full figure by itself. When brides with a straight shape wear this silhouette, the longer and straight proportions of their upper body balance out by the larger proportions of the skirt.

Sheath: The benefit of this silhouette is that the straight appearance creates an illusion of curves in the lower body. As a result, your body shape will tend to look curvier than it actually is.

A-line: A-line dresses with a defined waistline and full skirt also look attractive on rectangle body types. This dress style creates a full look at the waistline and beyond, thus adding more dimension to your lower body.

If you are a rectangle, avoid wedding dress silhouettes that accentuate your straight structure. Stay away from trumpets, mermaids and fit and flare silhouettes that closely fit.

Therefore, it can be beneficial to look into getting a policy earlier rather than later in order to lock down more affordable rates to help save money down the road, even after the wedding.

Nutrition and fitness

Feeling your best on the day of your wedding includes more than just your hair and makeup. For many brides, this will also involve setting health goals. As stress can build up in the days leading up to the wedding, finding ways to channel and release some of this stress in a healthy way can reduce anxiety and keep you feeling energized to prepare for the big day.

The months leading up to your wedding will most likely leave you with little room in your schedule, so consider planning out your meals ahead of time with healthy meal prep recipes. Not only is this an efficient use of your time, but it can help you reach your goals, so you look and feel amazing when it’s time to say ‘I do.” Different foods provide different benefits and can act as a motivation to stay on track for your health goals. Similarly, your fitness goals might be something you want to include on your pre-wedding to-dos. Whether your goals are weight-loss related or you simply want to get a good sweat in, working out before your wedding can help combat jitters and relieve some of the pressures associated with planning a wedding. There are even special ‘bridal boot camps’ that are aimed to specifically help brides get in shape and toned for the big day.

Self-care

It can be stressful just trying to keep up with the many mundane tasks that your wedding will call for, make sure to set aside time to show yourself some love. When you are the best version of yourself, you are able to give more love—and what a great mindset to begin your new life as a married couple.

There are several ways you can practice self-care, and what methods or practices work best will vary from bride to bride. Spa visits and massages are great ways to reduce stress, but as a soon to be bride—you might be looking for a more affordable option to include in your daily routine.

Practicing meditation has many benefits, including lengthening your attention span, which can come in handy as you discuss with your partner the smaller wedding details. There are meditations that can be completed under twenty minutes, so even finding a small window to work this in can help boost your mood and help you feel refreshed.

Vibe of the wedding

Anything from the bridal dress you select to the color scheme you decide, every little detail of your wedding will contribute to the overall vibe you are looking to achieve as you lock in your commitment to your forever person. When you start to make big decisions, like the venue or the wedding date, be sure you have a clear vision and mutual understanding with your partner on how you are picturing this day. Try to consider each other’s wants and needs on this special day and enjoy making these decisions as a couple.

Whether you are hoping for a luxurious, glamorous, whimsical, unconventional, or anything in between, the feel of your wedding will be something that you will feel long after the day is over. The season you pick to get married in, the people you invite, and how you decorate and celebrate all play a part in making your idea come to life, so be thoughtful and selective when making these decisions.

Often, it can seem harder to organize and plan all the small details yourself, so keep in mind the different resources you have available to help seal the deal. Wedding planners are great resources for something looking to take many tasks off their plates, and with their expertise in the industry, they can help offer special tips and tricks. While this might be out of the price range for you, also don’t forget about the free information available as well. Pinterest boards and online influencers can offer inspiration and can be a great place to reference when it comes time to make some of your own plans.

Your relationship

Isn’t this obvious? While the entire point of wedding ceremonies and receptions are about coming together and celebrating finding the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, ironically, the wedding planning process can cause unwanted tension within relationships. As statistics show that the average American engagement lasts 15 months, which leaves over a year of time you could spend during this engagement period.

Setting aside quality time to focus on your partner and getting closer to them during your engagement can help prepare you as you take your relationship to the next level. Although you might find yourself disagreeing about certain aspects of the wedding, learning to overcome these challenges and effectively communicate with one another can be an important skill to take with you in the years to come.

Discover what type of bonding experiences work best for you as a couple, and try not to sacrifice this time despite your busy schedules. While you may have to cut back on costs while you save for the big day, there are still ways you can get creative in showing your love to your fiance, continuing to grow closer. For example, spending an evening reminiscing about the journey that has brought you to this point is a sweet and simple reminder of what truly matters.

Name change

If this is not something you and your partner have previously discussed, it is most definitely something you will want to talk about earlier rather than later in your planning process. It’s becoming more common for individuals to keep their maiden name, having an open and honest discussion with your fiance on your stance on this subject is significant. Since this can influence your save the dates, invitations, and, more importantly, your upcoming legal documents that will need to be changed, spend time reflecting on what the right decision is for you and your partner.

If you choose to take your partner’s last name, remember that several items will need to be updated, including your passports, loans, your employer documentation, driver’s license, and more. This can be a time-consuming process, so starting to make these changes ahead of time will reduce stress as the actual day of the wedding approaches.

On the other hand, if you or your partner are hesitant about changing last names, there are different options and discussions you can have so that you are both comfortable with the outcome you choose. You can discuss last-name change alternatives or see if there is room for compromise. No couple is the same, so how you navigate this in your relationship can be just as unique as the love you share for one another.

Honeymoon plans

Possibly just as important as your actual wedding day itself is what you have planned right after! The honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to enjoy your new spouse with uninterrupted alone time and decompress from months of hard work and planning.

The reason behind looking into these travel plans upfront is because of how you will need to incorporate them into your wedding budget. In order to make the most financially responsible decisions to ensure your long-term financial wellbeing, you will need to decide how much you will prioritize your honeymoon and allocate funds accordingly.

With couples spending an average of $4,466, it is still something that couples need to factor into the costs. Whether you opt for a beach trip or sailing the seas, the opportunities are endless. Another consideration to think about is when you want to take your honeymoon. Some couples choose to postpone their honeymoon to a little after the wedding to alleviate some financial pressures, so this could be a discussion to have with your partner to see what works best for your situation.

Wedding song

Finding your wedding song can be a lovely break from some of the other grueling tasks you are trying to accomplish. While there is no right or wrong way to go about this, there are certainly a few tips you can follow to help you select the perfect first dance song.  From reflecting on your love story to actually deciding how it will be played at the reception, these are all factors that brides shouldn’t neglect. A wedding song is also a great way to have a piece of that day to relive in the long years to come in your marriage, so opting for something timeless and representative to you as a couple can have a meaningful impact.

Similarly, if you are planning for other dances with moms or dads of the married couple, including the relatives in the process can be a touching experience. As your options can vary from genre to different versions of songs, your options are endless.

On top of the actual song, how it will be performed is another area to consider. If you have a live band or musician booked, going through a dry-run of how it will sound on the big day can help you better make your selection. Furthermore, this provides the perfect opportunity to practice your first dance and release any jitters you both might have about your performance!

With these many considerations and areas to take into account, you’ll have lots to think about as you prepare for your big day. Although it may seem slightly overwhelming now, rest assured that you have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and at the end of the day, this comes first.
